SIT LA REE os TEA ' I Wednesday, December 19, 1979 36 Pages Durham-Northumberland riding Candidates swing into action Officials with the three major parties in the federal riding of Durham-Northum- berland admit that the fall of the government last week caught them off guard but the local riding associations are already swinging into action for the election slated for February 18. Incumbent Allan Law- rence, who swept to an easy victory for the Conservatives in the election last May, and was given two Cabinet port- folios, is expected to get his party's nomination by acclamation. New Democrat Fred McLaughlin of Janetville, has also declared his inten- tion to seek the nomination of his party this time around, and a spokesman for the, New Democrats says a' nominating meeting will be held during the first week of January. The executive of the New Democrat riding association for Durham-Northumber- land met Monday evening in Bowmanville to map out campaign strategy, and a Spokesman told the Star that the organization is ""in fairly good shape financially." A spokesman for the local Liberal association told the Star that a nominating meet- ing has been set for Januray 3 at the Bowmanville High School, and the association executive has asked Dr. Ian Wilson to carry the Liberal colours again this election. Dr. Wilson, a Cobourg surgeon indicated over the weekend that he has not yet made up his mind whether to seek the nomination again, but would make a decision this week. SRI YR IN 4 High school teachers get new contract The approximately 1000 secondary school teachers with the Durham Board of Education have accepted a one-year contract which will give them a 7.5 per cent salary increase.
