Dec. 27. Captain Donnie Young, who accounted for 13 points in three games scored two goals, and teammate Russell Jones added a pair in the 5-0 victory in the final. Steve Lee, who also played well over the three games, added the final goal. Ken Harman recorded the shutout. Each game in the tourney consisted of three ten minute periods. The final and conso- lations were five minutes longer in the final frame. Jones opened the scoring against Uxbridge when his second effort shot was lifted over goalie Carl Risebrough after Port had controlled play in the Uxbridge end. Jamie Lane and Young assisted. Peter Oosterholt did the damage when he put in a rebound off the stick of Mark Goreski. Brian Hendricks also assisted. The goal came with 1:01 left in a tight checking contest. It also happened while Port Perry was a man short. The game was a goalkeep- er"s duel between Port's Doug Arscott and Roland Powles of Newcastle. The only goal Arscott allowed was by Mike Wilks as he went around the defence to flip the puck over the fallen goalie, with less than a minute remaining in the second period. Arscott made more stops than his counterpart did in the second period as his team was outplayed some- what. The Newcastle defence managed to shut down any Port offensive thrust. Young fired it in at 1:32 of the second period. Young's next goal came on a slap shot from the blue line on a power play to give Port a 3-0 lead at the 4:44 mark. Young plays center on his regular shift in addidtion to playing the point on power plays because of his excellent slap shot. Just over a minute later, Jones added another goal while the visitors were play- ing shorthanded. Jeff John- stone and Vaughn McKee drew assists. Lee corfcluded the scoring with his third period score while he was lying on the ice. Four Uxbridge skaters plus Risebrough were also down on the ice at the time the puck entered the net. Port Perry coach Doug Scott was enthusiastic over his team's second tourna- ment win. "We're playing well...playing excellent," he exclaimed. He called Kevin Trapp a standout in the meet. Even though the match was the tenth straight for Port without a loss, the coach felt that the squad still needs work in checking and shooting. Uxbridge had gained entry into the final with a surpris- ingly tough 5-2 win over the Port Perry B's. Left winger Mark Kerry put Port Perry on top early when he put a slap shot between netmind- er Steve Prentice's legs at 3:13 of the opening session. Uxbridge tied the score before the close of the period on Russ Aitchison's marker. Uxbridge tied the score before the close of the period on Russ Aitchison's marker. David Kemp, the best player on the B team put his team ahead with 3:21 remaining in the second when he popped a rebound into an open net while Prent- ice was down. Just when it looked as though there might be an all Port Perry final, Uxbridge wingers Shane Redshaw and Darryl Davis combined for four goals. Davis netted three goals for his hattrick and Redshaw had a goal and an assist. The Port Perry B team scored a 3-1 decision over Unionville for their first win. Mike Thompson did the most damage with a pair of goals. 12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., January 3, 1980 ° Bantams win tourney with 5-0 final victory . Unionville's long goal opened the scoring when Brad Treasure watched his shot trickle past the goal line .off netminder Doug Arscott's glove. A second effort by Thomp- son counted for a goal with 1:02 left when he banged his own rebound past John Wiggelhan. An Ian Dixon blue line blast was tipped in by Thompson early in the final segment. Later in the game defenceman Dixon made a good play on diving stop of a three on one break. In elimination matches, the Port PerryA's romped over the Peterborough Petes 10-1 and beat the Oshawa Blues 5-2. Young had a hat trick and Jones added a couple in the Petes game. Lane, newly recalled Mark Goreski, McKee, Howard Lee, and Steve Lee, each had one. Oshawa Blues pressed Port early in their game but Jerry Jackman came up with some good saves. The first period was scoreless as the Blues dominated the first five minutes but the host rebounded. Young elected to shoot the puck when he was leading a two on one rush and his shot eluded netminder Jerome Kroepfel 55 seconds into the middle period. Oshawa got that back when Jeff Mullin blasted a shot from the corner high into the net. Trapp put Port Perry up 2-1 when a power play wrist shot off his stick eluded the Oshawa puck stopper. It came off the draw as Young got it back to Trapp's blue line partner Brian Stevenson who relayed it to Trapp. Young got Port's second power play score on a shot from the point after 52 seconds of the third period. Young also deflected a Stan Glass drive on another man- power advantage. The A team would event- ually have their, unbeaten skein snapped "after 12 games. Nevertheless, they seem to be a team that is improving with every game. They are playing a close checking game effectively and are getting a more - balanced scoring attack, even though Young is the offensive wheelhorse. The goaltending from Jackman and Harman has been top flight. The team seems to be growing in confidence after a rocky start. Durham-Northumberland P.C.
