No luck for Bantams at Uxbridge tourney by Danny Millar Port Perry Beare Motors Bantam A's won two games in the Uxbridge hockey tournament on Saturday, Dec. 29 before bowing out after losses to teams they had already beaten--the Uxbridge A's, and Lakefield by identical 2-0 margins. In the first game of the tournament, played at 8:00 a.m. Port Perry shutout the B team from Uxbridge 4-0. Jerry Jackman was never severely tested between the pipes for Port Perry. Steve Lee connected for the first goal from Howard Lee after 1:54 of play. The only other eventful play of the period came later when defenceman Vaughan McKee made a diving stop on a break away. A near perfect pass from Russ Jones to Steve Lee as Lee broke over center accounted for the second goal. Jones threaded the needle with the pass as Lee was splitting the defence and Lee finished it off with a nifty deke. John Vaz assisted. Donnie Young pocketed a rebound off a shot from right winger Howard Lee from the right side of the net. Jamie Lane was given credit for an assist on the play. Left winger Jones made another good pass to set up the forth goal with 2:09 left in the second period. Jones head manned the puck to Young at center ice and Young netted his second on a wrist shot. The third period was scoreless. Port Perry held the advantage in play but could not put the puck into te net. Uxbridge used a two man forechecking system that caused Port Perry rear- guards a few problems. Port got a break late in the game to defeat Lakefield 3-2 in their second match. Jeff Johnstone took an interference penalty with 1:38 to go in the highly EVI] entertaining match. Port Perry went into the four corner defence to prevent a Lakefield goal. As a Lake- field defenceman uncorked a slap shot from the blue line, Young, who was playing the forward spot, blocked it and sped down the ice. (You could have heard a pin drop in the arena as Young went in alone). He scored on a picture perfect deke with :28 left. Young had put Port Perry ahead in the first period when he blasted a slap shot from the blue line after Port had won the draw in the Lakefield end. It came on a power play, which has been exceptionally effective for Port lately. Lakefield evened things up late in the first period but Vaughan McKee emerged from the penalty box to accept a pass from John- stone and Seong a long drive after 4:56'of play in the second session. Juveniles still having problems by Danny Millar Port Perry Emiel's Place Juveniles hockey team suffered its second success- ive shutout in one week when they were hammered 10-0 by Oshawa on Thursday Dec. 20 in Port Perry. Earlier in the week they were beaten 18-0 by Whitby. In the Oshawa game Port Perry was without regular captain Tim Thompson, who is vacationing in the Baham- as, as was defenceman Mike Tobin and newly acquired Wallace. Carl Durward replace Thompson as captain for the game. Durward was victimized for the first goal when John Fanning went around him and deked Warren Nicho- lishen for the score. It came at 4:52 with the teams play- ing five aside. Nicholishen was given back to back starting assignments because of a hand injury to Glenn Archibald. Fanning ended up with two Novice all-stars earn consolation After a short rest, Port Perry Pearce Auctioneers took time out to enjoy the holiday season. At the 'Durward's house Santa Claus gave out gifts for all . the boys plus a special gift from coach Don Steele and Gary McConnell, a personal picture of each player on a badge. A very warm thought and thankyou from every- one. Last Saturday Port Perry travelled to Keene for the Otonobee tournament and won the consolation trophy. Pearce Auctioneers met the Peterborough Petes in their first game and suffered a 2-1 loss. Peterborough scored first. Port came back in the second period with the only goal from Derek Lewis, assisted by Mike Sorley and Mike Feasby. Port Perry had to play hard defencively, and they tried desparately but the Petes attacking force scored the winning goal iun the third period. In the second game against Bancroft Port Perry squeezed by a win of 4-3. Port Perry banged in 3 goals in the last 5 minutes of play in the first period. Scoring for Port were Shane Wark ERSON.- INSURANCE AGENCY LIMITED 193 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY 985-7306 The one you're looking for. ALL LINES OF GENERAL INSURANCE assisted by Mat Durward, Mike Sorley unassisted, and Jarret Harmen assisted by Mike Sorley and Paul Wylie. - The Second period was scoreless. It appeared by the third period Port Perry held their heads high a little too soon, as Bancroft wrapped in 3 goals to tie the score and it looked like overtime was evident. However, in the last 18 seconds of the game time Mike Sorley intercepted a pass and scored. Now bringing Port to the final match against Omemee this was a tight close check- ing hockey game. Omemee picked up the first goal. Port came back and Jeff Mills put us on the scoreboard. Omemee scored in the second period and went ahead 2-1. Clair Cornish tied the score off the rebound from Mike Sorley. Jeff Mills fed the puck from the blue line on an unassisted goal and lead Port Perry to a victorious 3-2 win. Port Perry had no penalties throughout the tournament. Chris McConnell played 3 good solid games in net. Dave Dickson started the play at his own blue line when his pass went between the defence pairing of Rowen Kennedy and Dale Geer. Kennedy retrieved the stray puck and took it behind his own net, and fell. He got up and passed it to center where Parker was located. Parker also tried to body check to ice surface, but managed to get to his feet without losing possession. Mark Cleveland and Kane were ejected from the game for their parts in a second period scuffle that started in the corner in the Oshawa end.
