I would like to give an honourable mention to Jill Kendall who played defense very solid. Good work Jill. On Saturday, January 5, 1980 we met the same team and the score again ended in a tie 3-3. There was a lot of good skating, good checking, and some really heads up plays made. Scoring for Port Perry Ives were Rhonda White with 2 goals, Janice Jackman with 1 goal and Janet Dean with 2 assists. Oshawa opposition by Danny Millar Friday, January 4 marked the first time in five years that three basketball teams from Port Perry High School each won a game over opponents from Central Collegiate of Oshawa. The Junior contest was the most entertaining of the three as the Redmen edged the visiting Chiefs 49-43 in a three minute overtime period. The game went into overtime when Port Perry's Brett Oosterman missed two free throws with no time left on the clock in the final quarter. The Redmen came up with six points in over- time while Central did not score at all. Todd Wilbur led Port Perry scoring with 15 points. Kevin Harris also hit in double figures with ten. Peter Stone had eight, Scott Sinclair five, John Wynsma three, and Peter Christie and ®John Butler each had two in the victory. 'The senior team had a surprisingly tough match against the Chiefs but man- aged to take a 51-43 decision. One of the biggest problems "for Port Perry was Guy Morey who paced the Central attack with 25 points. Central boasted a rather tall team that played a tight defensive style of game. Thisdefense succeeded in keeping Port Perry captain George Cope off the score- board in the first half. Port Perry held a 17-14 lead at half-time, but Cope led a third quarter surge that gave the Redmen a 13 point spread with eight minutes to play. Morey led a slight come- back by Central in the last quarter, but Port hung on for the win. No other Chief scored more than six points in the entire game. A strong ball-handling and passing game by Donnie Young was a key factor in the 49-44 win for the Port Perry Midgets. In the second quarter Young connected with five straight foul shots. Later in the same period, he set up baskets by Jamie Lane and Scott Patton with sharp passes. He fed Patton down the court on a fast break and then found Lane open in traffic to set him up for a scoring drive. Port Perry plays host to the Bowmanville Redmen on Tuesday, January 8, as the regular league play continues.
