McClelland A goal by centre Phil Cochrane with 11 seconds left in the game gave Port Perry MoJacks an important 3-2 victory over the Uxbridge Bruins in Junior C action Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. The win moved Port Perry into a sixth place tie in the standings with Uxbridge, and both teams have two regular schedule games remaining. If the two clubs remain tied for sixth, the MoJacks will finish ahead of Uxbridge because the team has beaten the Bruins in three out of the four meetings this year. If that happens, MoJacks will meet the third place team in the first round of the play-offs, a best of five affair and the opposition will likely be the Port Hope Panthers, a team the MoJacks have had some success against this season. While Phil Cochrane got the game winner in the dying seconds, MoJack captain Bill Bridge did a lot of the work on the play, picking up a loose puck near centre ice, bulling his way into the Bruin zone before feeding a pass to Cochrane who was cruising near the goal- mouth. That goal came just two minutes after the Bruins had tied the score at two each on a marker by Jamie Sinclair at the 17:55 mark of the third period. MoJacks had taken a 2-1 lead into the third period, and both teams played tight, cautious hockey for about 15 minutes of the final stanza. Just before Sinclair got the tying marker, MoJacks had put tremendous pressure on Bruin net-minder Kevin McGibney with Phil Cochrane and Rob Garrow both having good chances to get the insurance goal. The crowd was one of the: smallest for a MoJack home: game this season, probably because the Steelers and the Rams were fighting it out on the tube for Super Bowl 14. However, the fans who did show up at the Scugog Arena were treated to a pretty decent hockey game, close checking at times, and high- lighted by some excellent goal-tending at both ends of the rink by Ray Gibson and Kevin McGibney. LAA) ya Port Perry netminder Ray Gibson keeps a close eye on that solid game in the nets for the MoJ loose puck in front of him as Uxbridge forward Dan MacIntyre gets other end of the rink, Kevin Mc Loose puck looks tempting set for a shot during Junior C action Sunday evening. Gibson had a Bruins 3-2 in an exciting game. Although Bruins seemed to have a slight edge in the play from a territorial point of view, MoJacks had the better scoring opportunities. In the first period, Phil Cochrane missed a wide open net, Rob Garrow slid one through the crease, Rob Greiner was foiled on a clear break-away as the puck roll- ed wide of the goal after he put one deke too many on McGibney. Greiner and Bill Bridge were buzzing in the Bruin zone just about every time they were on the ice, and both had a couple of excellent scoring chances. After a scoreless opening period, Bruin Bill Bayard put his team on the board first with a short-handed Junior Cstandings January 20th TEAM w L Bowmanville 18 7 Cobourg 17 5 Port Hope 17 9 Stouffville 17 12 Lindsay 14 12 Port Perry 13 16 Uxbridge 13 16 Beaverton 9 17 Little Britain 2 26 T GF GA PTS 5 206 133 41 6 235 152 40 4 201 162 38 2 169 170 36 4 a3 1M 32 1 176 187 27 1 158 171 27 4 139 165 22 1 103 282 5 goal at the 1:04 mark of the middle period. = MoJacks were guilty of some sloppy puck-handling in their own zone and Bayard found himself alone in front of Gibson who had no chance on the shot to the corner of the net. MoJacks leading scorer Phil Cochrane tied the score a minute later on a set-up from Greiner and Garrow. Cochrane hit the top corner of the net. Although he wasn't creditied with a point on the play, Bill Owen had an important role on Cochrane's goal as he was parked right on McGibney's door-step, giving him a rough time and setting up an effective screen. Kelly Neals gave MoJacks a 2-1 lead at the 3:41 mark of the second period when he slammed home a rebound from the right side after Mike Mitchell had drilled a shot on net from the slot area. The 2-1 score stood up until Sinclair tied it late in the third and Cochrane and Bridge teamed up with 11 seconds remaining to give the MoJacks the two points for the victory. The game featured some heavy hitting throughout, but for the most part, the players kept it clean. Refer- ee Herb Sinclair gave the players a fairly free rein, calling 16 minor penalties, nine to the MoJacks and seven to the Bruins. Bruins captain Mike Barton was involved in a couple of wrestling matches, with Mike Mitchell in the second period and Mike Healey in the third. No serious punches were landed in either of these skirmishes, and in both cases the players got double minor penalties, rather than five minute majors. Port Perry outshot the visitors 33 to 29 with both goalies making some good stops when under pressure. The victory for Port Perry is the third in a row for the team, and the MoJacks are now looking ahead to the first round of the play-offs. The team gave up eight goals in the past three games and seems to be tightening things up defensively. Along the blue line, Chic Tyson, Darrin Jobb, John Robertson and Charlie Brown turned in steady performances and "they are playing with more confidence and authority, clearing the man from in front of the net, and moving the puck quickly out of the defensive zone. Bill Owen returned to the line-up after missing several games with a suspension and injury. While his timing looked to be a little rusty because of the lay-off, he nearly had a couple of goals while anchoring the point on the MoJack power play. Newcomer Greg Dwyer, an experienced junior player from Oshawa, sat out the game with a sore shoulder. He has played well in his two games this year and will acks as did his counterpart at the Gibney, as Port Perry nipped the certainly be ready for the play-offs. Mojacks have two regular schedule games remaining. They pay a visit to Little Britain this Saturday even- ing for a match against the last-place Merchants and wind up the season at the Scugog Arena Sunday night for a game against Cobourg. That should be a good match as the MoJacks will be looking to strengthen their grip on sixth spot and get tuned up for the play-offs and the Cougars will be no push-over as they are in a dog-fight for first place with the Bowmanville Eagles.
