" Midget Redmen undefeated by Danny Millar The Midget Redmen of Port Perry High School have been the edrly surprise in the basketball season so far. They came up with their fourth straight victory of the year with a 52-44 win over the Saints of Paul Dwyer of Oshawa on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The juniors also shaded the Saints by a 51-45 margin. Paul Dwyer does not have a senior team so the oldest Redmen were inactive. One aspect of the midget matchup that pleased Port Perry coach John Rodway is that it was the team's first win since forward Scott Patton was transferred to the United States. Patton teamed with guard Donnie Young to form the nucleus of the Redmen offence. After the game coach Rodway was quick to praise his athletes. '"The big thing is our guys are hustling, on defence. They're playing good defensive basketball. Everyone's giving us a solid effort." He also stated that the team would miss Patton. -.. Stan Glass started in place "of ratton and shoed a good outside shooting attack, hitt- ing on two field goals late in the first quarter, as Port grabbed a 14-8 lead. Diminutive Ken Elliott came off the bench early in the second period and scored seven points before depart- ing about three minutes later. Elliott's performance was part of the reason that Rodway stated, "I think we're going to have good bench strenth." Elliot's contribution and four points in the remaining 30 seconds of the second session gave Port a 32-20 half time lead. The Saints closed the gap to 38-30 with only one eight minute quarter to go. With 3:47 to go Dwyer scored a basket to climb to within two points and 22 seconds later, after Port Perry had scored on a foul shot, they came to a 41-40 difference. Greg Naterer, who topped the Saints with 16 points, hit an inside layup a while later to tie the score at 42-42, Two crucial field goals, one by Young on a line drive and a jump shot from Glass, gave the Redmen a four point advantage and they didn't allow the Saints to come back. Ajax nips Bantams by a score of 8-6 by Danny Millar The Port Perry Beare Motors Bantam A's stayed close all the way but sloppy defence and weak goaltend- ing lost the game for them as they were nipped 8-6 by Ajax in their final league game of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Ken Harman is usually very steady between the pipes for Port Perry but he had an off night against Ajax, allowing several easy goals. The defence was the goat on the first goal as Kelly Grubb drew them away from the open man in front of the net and then passed behind his back for the easy shot from Dave O'Hara at 11:59. It was the first of three goals for O'Hara and four assists for Grubb. O'Hara got the second goal of the game 30 seconds later when he tipped in a drive from the point. Grubb grabbed an assist on the play. Both goals came on the same shift. Ajax struck again for the third time in the initial period on a quick play. They won a draw and a blazing slapper from the face-off circle by Allen Ottaway was behind Harman before he knew what happened. Steve Lee managed to get one back just before the horn sounded to end the first period when his backhander got past goalie Mark Cook. The goal was a result of a neat passing play. Russ Jones started it by handing off to Jeff Johnstone, who fed Lee with a cross-rink pass. Captain Donnie Young took a regular shift on defence and usual center- man got the second goal for Port with a walk in slap shot after taking the pass from Mark Goreski. John Vaz set up Howard Lee from behind the net to the slot at 3:50 for the tying goal. Lee's first shot hit the goaler's pad but he popped the rebound into a wide open side. Scott Grey put the visitors back on top with an unusual play at 4:21. Grey completed the two on one break -by carrying the puck all the way around the net before depos- iting it into an open corner. Port Perry tied it up for the second time with 2:22 left in the middle period. Young moved the puck into the corner and back out again before giving it to Kevin Ferguson for the scoring shot. The floodgates opened with six goals in the final 15 minutes, four of them by Ajax. Ajax drew first blood by regaining the lead for the third time in the game on a power play as Vic Lynch was left alone in fropt of Harman and accepted a pass from behind the net for the easy goal. Grey took a high sticking infraction that resulted in a goal by Young. Young un- loaded a slap shot just inside the Ajax blue line that was in the net so fast it must have left spectator's heads spinning... Ajax went ahead at 4:21 on O'Hara's third goal but then another superb Young shot tied the game for the fourth time, on a power play after O'Hara had been called for tripping. Ajax went ahead to stay with 4:38 left in the highly entertaining match when Troy Campbell pocketed a rebound after Grubb had taken the first shot. Campbell put the game away with his goal 50 seconds from the end. 66 Brock St. W., Uxbridge 852-5291 lp a a ap a oan an Lge na Lyn Lan apn Ln | a ae on TCC ICSC 30a 32 52 52 92 52 525252 52S: [Fe <52525¢5252525252525052525252525252525252525252525252525252525252525050525050 5 D. They have beaten that team in three out of four meetings this year. Uxbridge does not have a forward that can match Young's forepower or a centerman that can keep him in check. Steve Lee, Russ Jones, Howard Lee, Jeff Johnstone, and John Vaz may have to supply some backup scoring punch. Vaughn McKee is the top blueliner on the Port Perry team. McKee generally plays an effective, aggres- sive type of game but takes a lot of penalties. Penalties are something that Uxbridge will have to watch very carefully because Port's power play is top rate, as the offence sets it up to Young. Two top scoring forwards that Uxbridge have are Shane Redshaw and Darryl Davis and this duo could team together to cause Port Perry some problems. Guard Todd Wilbur held the hot hand in the junior contest as he hit for ten points in the first quarter and six more in the fourth as he went on to score 20 to lead the Redmen in their win over the junior Saints. The Saints worked the ball to a good long distance shooter in Pat Ferren as he hooped 17 points. If they could manage to penetrate the Port Perry defence, the Saints put the ball to Chris Damaren under the basket for easy layups. This did not happen very often as Damaren managed only eight points. Dwyer led 28-26 at half time and by one point at the end of three quarters but eight straight points in the fourth quarter put the game in the bag for the Redmen. The junior Redmen now boast a 3-1 won-loss record. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., January 23, 1980 -- 11 in four starts They have beaten Bowman- ville, Central, and Dwyer while losing to the O'Neill Redmen. The midget team won its game over O'Neill to remain the only unbeaten Port Perry team. The seniors are 2-1, also having been whipped by O'Neill. The teams take a two week break for examinations at PPHS but return to action January 29 against the Trojans of McLaughlin. Juveniles end season with 6-2 loss to Toros by Danny Millar Port Perry Emiel's Place juveniles began the Lake- shore league season the same way they started it-- with a loss. Unfortunately for Port fans and players all but three of the games in between have also been loss- es. The most recent setback was a 6-2 loss to the Bowmanville Toros on Thursday, Jan. 14. There was a new face in the Port Perry line up. Brian Pomeroy fit in on right wing with Tim Thompson at centre and Carl Durward on the left side at the beginn- ing of the game. Pomeroy played last year in Oshawa. He did not look out of place and with a few games worth of experience under his belt he could be an asset to the team. He played in the spot normally occupied by Dave Dickson, who was not in the line up. Ralph Watts set up the first Toro goal with a drop pass to Otto Geratschuck, who, scored on Glenn Archi- bald at 3:56 of the opening stanza. The goal was the first of a trio for Gerat- schuck. Watts got a goal of his own to put Bowmanville up 2-0 at 6:57. Watts took the puck after it bounced off defence- man Dale Geer's stick and took a shot that Archibald managed to stop but he WHY PAY MORE? Pomeroy took a penalty on his second shift of the game and before he emerged on the ice again the Toros had scored. Kevin Noble's blue line slap shot was the damaging blow. Jim Kane got the host team on the board with 2:35 left in the opening period when his shot eluded goal- tender Mike Patterson. Dave Canning assisted. The two combined for the second Port goal late in the game when Canning fired in a hard slap shot after he got a lucky bounce off the boards from Kane. At the time Port was playing with a five on four manpower advantage. Bowmanville countered with a power play of its own with 6:57 to go in the middle segment when Geratschuck netted a wrist shot. Doudey got his second assist in what turned out to be a hattrick of assists for him. Toros got one more from Geratschuck before the end of the second period when he beat Archibald from the right side near the corner with 1:31 left. The Bulls enjoyed a four minute power play early in the third period when Carl Durward took a double minor for roughting at 2:15. It was the second time in the fray that the Port winger was given a double minor. In the second period he slashed a player and then was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for debating it. The Toros could not penetrate the four corner defence on this occasion, so they went away empty handed. Port Perry takes on Uxbridge in the opening round of Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs starting next week. SUL TT 0.H.A. Junior 'C' Hockey SUNDAY, JANUARY 27th - 7:30 P.M.
