This home on a 2.5A lot on the 7th Concession West, Scugog Island has been made available as a group home for up to eight mentally retarded adults. The Central Seven Association has accepted the proposal, but nearby property owners may object to a necessary change in the zoning by-law. Objections to group home (From page 1) live on their own in the community. She said the home would be staffed by a residential director and three counsel- lors, and there would be supervision at the home 24 hours a day. When some of the property owners at the meeting expressed fear for the safety of young children living in the area, Mrs. Heintzman said the group home resi- dents are not dangerous. "If they were considered dangerous, there is no way they would be allowed to be part of this program," she emphasized. One property owner who said she has many years of nursing experience, ex- pressed fear for possible violerice, especially if the residents are taking some kinds of medications. She also said that just one night supervisor in the home is not enough for eight people. Another property owner also expressed fears for the safety of young children and retired people living in the area. "Children have to walk by the house to get to the school bus and collect the mail," she said. She also suggested that the area is too isolated and too far from Port Perry, and the group home residents would have to be transported into town to do such things as shopping. She said that if the intent of the group home concept is to allow the mentally retarded to integrate into the com- munity, a house on Scugog Island is not the right loca- tion. Mr. Deeth told the meeting that Central Seven learned just recently that the house could be available for this purpose under the terms of the will of the late owner, Mrs. Amy Smith, who stipu- lated that the house be used for charity for the next 12 years, when the ownership will then revert to a grand- CLEANING son. Mr. Deeth said that Central Seven has received approval from the provincial government to establish a group home in the Scugog- Brock or Uxbridge area. Central Seven has been looking without success for a suitable house for the past few months, but if the pro- posal is not operating by the end of March this year, there is a chance the government will withdraw its approval for such a home in this area. He added that government officials have inspected the house on Scugog Island, and have given approval in principle for that location. However, several property owners who attended the meeting were adamant in their opposition to the loca- tion, and three said after the meeting that they are prepared to take the issue to the Ontario Municipal Board.
