McClelland Solid goal-tending and strong fore-checking were the key factores Sunday night as the Port Perry MoJacks thrashed league- leading Cobourg Cougars 9-3 in Junior C action at the Scugog Arena. The victory ended the regular schedule on a positive note for the Mojacks, who now meet third place Port Hope Panthers in the opening round of the play-offs. The win Sunday night was an important one for the MoJacks, although it had no bearing on where Port Perry finishes in the standings or who the team will meet in the first play-off round. It was a different story for the Cougars, however, who needed just a tie to lock up first place. The Cougars are a tough, high-scoring team, and this was their first loss since November 28. Also, it was just the second time this season that Cobourg has scored less than five goals in a game. The MoJacks were full marks for the victory with the forwards hounding the Cougars all evening, bump- ing them off the puck, and taking advantage of scoring chances. When Cougars did work into position for shot on goal, Ray Gibson performed superbly for the MoJacks, facing 39 shots, many of them of a tough variety. Gibson was especially sharp near the end of the first period when the MoJacks ran into a string of penalties. On one occasion when the MoJacks were two men short, the penalty killing unit of Stu Cochrane, Clarke Menzies, and Darrin Jobb did an excellent job of bottling up the Cougars. Captain Bill Bridge also turned in a strong game killing off penalties. Stu Cochrane helped his team in the scoring depart- ment as he turned the hat- trick. His first at 11:35 of the opening period was a nifty -affair. Bridge fed Rob Greiner a lead pass, and Greiner drew the lone Cobourg defenseman out of the play before sliding the puck to Cochrane who tipped it past goalie Phil Hennessy. Cochrane got his second of the night at 14:41 when he caught the corner off a scramble beside the Cobourg net. That goal came just seconds after Cobourg captain Bob Harneen had tied the score at one each when he took a pass from Bill Hutchings and found himself all alone in front of Gibson, who had no chance on the shot to the corner. 'Port Perry took the 2-1 lead into the second period but Harnden netted his second of the night at 3:04 when his team was playing MoJacks trash Oe hn jt ¥ [ rs po 7 ¥ oh + ' ap - * x Cobourg goalie Mark Flesch got one leg up in the air on this play during Junior C action Sunday night. MoJacks gave Cobourg a short-handed. MoJack defenseman Steve Jones gave the puck away in his own zone and Harnden made no mistake on the clean break-away. That tied the score and might have turned the game around for Cobourg, but at the 8:02 mark, Phil Cochrane put the MoJacks ahead for good when he tucked home a rebound on the power play, after Bill Owen had blasted a hard shot from the point. Phil Cochrane boosted the margin to two goals a little over a minute later, again on the power play, when he deflected a Rob Garrow shot past Hennessey. Dave Alexander made the score 5-2 in favour of the MoJacks when he was set up perfectly in the slot by line- mate Mike Mitchell at the 13:25 mark of the second. Alexander and Mitchell both had good games for the MoJacks in the fore- checking department. In the third period, Chic Tyson made it 6-2 when he floated a shot from the blue line, and Rob Garrow scored two minutes later when he slapped home a power play goal from the left point. Cobourg goalie Phil Hennessy was injured in the third period when he took a hard shot on the shoulder off the stick of MoJack defens- man John Robertson, who made a nice rush up ice and worked himself into position for the shot from 25 feet. Hennessy shook it off, but after Garrow's goal two minutes later, he was replaced in the nets by Mark Flesch. The Cougars got their final goal at 6:56 of the third as Pete Williams scored while Bill Owen was sitting out an elbowing penalty. Phil Cochrane got his third Hat-tricks for Phil and Stu Cochrane goal of the night at 13:54 on a set-up by Garrow and Menzies and Stu Cochrane nailed down his hat-trick at 16:42 on a close in shot from the side of the net, with Bridge drawing an assist. MoJacks finished the season with 31 points based on 15 wins, one tie, and 16 losses, good enough for sixth spot in the nine team loop. The team has been playing solid hockey of late with five straight victories, which rough time, however, as they £ nl skated to a 9-3 victory. Port Perry meets Port Hope in the opening play-off round. have boosted team morale and confidence. Although it has been an '""'up and down" season marked by inconsistency, the MoJacks finished nine points behind Port Hope Panthers. These two teams open their best of five play- off round this Thursday night in Port Hope with the second game in the Scugog Arena this Sunday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m. This series will feature the ourg Cougars two top scorers in the league. Panthers' Grey Bullen won the championship with 115 points, while Phil Cochrane nailed down second spot with 103 points on 56 goals and 47 assists. Cochrane missed three games during the year due to injury. In the other opening round series, Stouffville will meet Lindsay, and it looks like Cobourg will meet Beaver- ton and Bowmanville will go against the Uxbridge Bruins. Atoms defeat Uxbridge in two Play-off games Malmont Farms Atoms played their first game of the Play-offs on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in Uxbridge. Port came out on top by a score of 8-0, but the Port team did not play their usual positional game, and they appeared too confident against the Uxbridge team. Malmont picked up 6 of their goals while Uxbridge played short- handed, taking eight penal- ties throughout the game to Port's one. Uxbridge held Port to one goal in the first period when John Lally scored assisted by David Burnett. In the second period Blair Phillips scored from Ray Daniels and John Lally from Robbie Baker. During the third period Port threw the score wide open, picking up five unanswered goals. John Har- man scored assisted by Robbie Baker; David Burnett scored assisted by David Culbert and Brian Dean; David Burnett assist- ed by David Culbert; John Harman from Robbie Baker and John Lally from Bobby Goble. John Lally played well for Port picking up a hattrick for his efforts. Port Wins 3-1 On Wednesday Jan. 23, Port hosted the Uxbridge team for the second play-off game. This game was completely different from their first play-off encounter. The Uxbridge team had a practice at 7:00 a.m. that morning which must have been very beneficial to them. They created pressure for Port throughout the game, checking the Port Atoms very closely. The first two periods went scoreless, with goalies on both teams com- ing up with excellent saves. Finally in the third period Robbie Baker scored assist- ed by John Harman. Ux- bridge came back with a tying goal at the 5:27 mark. The game remained tied until the final 42 seconds when Bobby Goble made a good rush and scored un- assisted. Uxbridge pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker but Port held them off, and Blair Phillips scored in the empty net at 0:01 to make the final score 3-1. % tr
