Though they tried valiantly, both teams were knocked out of the Consolation round with Beacock's bowing out in the quarter-finals and Utica in the semis. It was a gruelling thirty- two team tournament start- ing at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning and finishing at 10:00 a.m. Sunday with round-the-clock playing. Both teams lost their first games by 1-0 scores when Utica bowed to Georgetown of the Toronto league in a tight game and Beacocks went down to a competitive Knox Fuel Flyers of Glanbrook after three minutes of sudden death overtime. In the second round of playing Utica came out Saturday afternoon and handed the Green Machine of the Lakeshore League a 2-0 defeat. Although the score isn't indicative of the game, Utica held the upper hand all the way with Don Card registering the shut- out. The goal scorers were Jack -Mitchell from Mike Mole and Keith Ellicott getting one from Phil Kinton. Beacocks pulled off a squeaker in downing Gulf Oil of Toronto by a 1-0 score in their game with Cordell Keuning netting the unassist- ed goal. Beacocks played the last 6 minutes a man short due to a major penalty, but with some steady defen- sive work and some good goaltending from Rick McLean, they staved off a tie and overtime. Utica pulled off an over- time win in the wee hours by putting out te Oshawa Generals with a 2-1 score. Utica drew first blood with Mike Mitchell scoring from Phil Kinton in the first period before Oshawa tied it up in the second. In the last two minutes, Utica threw every- thing at the Oshawa goaler, but the kitchen sink, but it remained tied. At 2:11 of the overtime, Tim Ashbridge and Keith Ellicott got a two on one break with Ashbridge passing it to Ellicott who tipped it in the empty net. Beacocks bowed out to a strong St. Clements team by a 2-0 score to finish them off. Blackstock had their chances to get in the game on a three man break and some good shooting, but couldn't get it past the goalkeeper. This St. Clements team was the fourth best team in the tournament as they lost by 2-1 to the Hamilton Road Runners and then wiped out the Oshawa Steelers 5-0 before dumping Beacocks. At 5:30 Sunday morning Utica dropped a 1-0 overtime game to St. Clements to douse their hopes of getting to the final. Utica had the better chances in this hard fought end-to-end game but couldn't net a goal as the end result showed. All in all the guys played good broomball but. couldn't get the breaks some of the other teams got. January 27th ..C&B Livestock remained undefeated after defeating Brians Towing 3-0 in a game that could have seen more goals for them, but fer the strong performance of Brian's Jim O'Neill between the pipes. Rounding out the scoring for C&B was Bruce Woodrow from Mark Lee and Doug Scott potted the last one from Robert Evans. Keith Fraser recorded the shut-out. Utica jumped to a 2-0 lead against Larocque Electric only to see the game tied up and they scored three quick goals in the final four minutes to win 5-2. Utica looked a little flat at the start of the game but that could have been tiredness from the Toronto tournament they were involved in Saturday and Sunday morning. Tim Ashbridge from Rick Collins and Jack Monsma from Tim Ashbridge put Utica ahead before Larocque charged back with goals from Kopie DeJong and Bill Bridge. Colin Wackett, Danny McKee and Bill Bridge pick- ed up the assits. Then Utica came alive with Bernie McEnaney, scoring unassist- ed, Rick Collins from Mike Mitchell and Phil Kinton from Gord Geer and Mike Mitchell put the finishing touches on. The last game of the day saw a weary Beacock's Hardware team score an early goal and hang onto the lead to down Emmerson's Insurance 1-0. Both teams had chances to score, but an errant pass or a check kept the shots on net down in this one. Gary Toutant from Steve Hawes did the damage for Beacocks. With this win for Beacocks and Larocque's loss the standings in the third, fourth and fifth positions have tightened up. C&B and Utica For the second year in a row, rink skipped by A Garnet Warriner won the annual Port Perry Curling Club Mens Open Bonspiel sponsored by Lake Scugog Lumber. Ted Griffen presented trophy to the winning Team too strong for Juveniles by Danny Millar After enjoying a brief two game unbeaten streak, the Port Perry Emiel's Place juveniles came crashing back to earth as they,"were swamped 8-3 by Brooklin- Whitby, one of the strongest teams in the Lakeshore league on Thursday, Jan. 10 at the Scugog Arena. The game started as though it would be a runa- way for Whitby when they took a 5-0 lead after 15 minutes and built it into a 6-1 margin after two periods. Warren Nicholishen started in goal for Port but was replaced by Glenn Archibald after allowing the first two goals. He did come back late in the game. Randy Stewart did the ground work for the first Whitby goal at 2:54 of the first period when he sent a pass through Tim Thomp- son's legs to Ron burns at the edge of the crease. Whitby struck again 19 seconds later on a pass from behind the net from Wayne Middleton to Dave Blaquire for the goal. The Port Perry defence has been shakey lately. Since the loss of Scott Heard, are still way ahead with thirty-one, and twenty-seven points respectively, but now Emmersons have twelve, Beacocks eleven, and Larocque ten with Brians trailing at five. Dale Geer and Rowen Kennedy have a tendency for taking costly penalties and that has hurt at times. Charlie Meither put Whitby up 3-0 with a flip shot over Archibald's shoulder at 5:38. It was the first of a couple of goals for Meither. The Port defence was at fault of the fourth goal when Burns was left wide open in front of the net to collect an easy rebound only 17 seconds after Meither's goal. J.P. Aggett took the original shot as he obtained the first of his three assists. After Meither got the fifth goal with 5:50 remaining in the initial period, Nicholish- en returned to his duty between the pipes. The second period was much more even as the teams traded goals. Carl Durward, playing on a different line, took a pass from Jim Kane to set up the Port marker. Dave Canning assisted on the goal which came with 5:05 left in the frame. Durward normally plays on a line with Thomp son and Dave Dickson. Dickson and Thompson teamed together for an excellent chance later in the period but Whitby goalie Rick Wills came up with the stop. Thompson did not miss, however, when he converted a behind the net pass from Dickson into a goal with 4:52 left.
