Cornish for winning the St. Johns annual tournament. This was the 13th tournament and Cornish would like to thank Mr. Jim Schwan and his assistants for their efforts in a job well done. Cornish defeated Ridge- way 38-7, M.J. Hobbs 20-5 and Joseph Gould 26-7 to win the tournament. Ridge- way won the consolation trophy. It was a very suc- cessful day. All members of the team played very well in moving the ball quickly which resulted in points. Rob Burnett did an excel- lent job in leading the team and his fine effort earned him the M.V.P. Trophy. Two wins for Atom Selects by Doreen Kendall Two first rate games of hockey were played over the past weekend with the Don Forder Atom Selects picking up two well earned wins. Both games were team efforts with some good passing and some excellent checking. Well done team. Friday, Jan. 25th, the Don Forder Insurance Atom Selects journeyed to Uxbridge and defeated the Uxbridge Selects 4 to 1. There was some excellent passing in this game. Scoring for Port saw Craig Venning put the puck away off a good pass from Mark Barkey and Mike Gibson. Brad Traves found the mark with a point shot off an assist from Jamie Menzies. A wild scramble in front of the net resulted in Bobby Bryans goal with an assist going to Andrew Steele. The final goal for Port was scored by Craig Venning with Robbie Jamieson picking up the assist. The goalies Mark Kendall and Kevin Cearns both gave excellent performances between the pipes. Well done team. Saturday, Jan. 26th the Don Forder Insurance Atom Selects played host to the Oshawa Little N.H.L. Bruins and came out on top of the 4 to 0 score. Irwin Smith to compete in Mini-tractor pulls Irwin Smith of Port Perry will be among competitors in the mini-tractor pulls at the Canada Farm Show, Janu- ary 29 to February 1, at the Coliseum, Exhibition Place, Toronto. Sanctioned by the Cana- dian Mini-Tractor Pullers Association, the mini events for 1200 Ib., 1500 1b. and 1700 Ib. tractors are part of Canada's only indoor tractor pull being held on the show's last two nights, January 31, and February 1. Drivers in the mini events will compete for a purse of $1400 out of total prize money of $24,200 being awarded to winners in 11 classes of com- petition ranging from four- wheel drive trucks and mini- tractors to modified apd super stock farm tractors weighing up to 12,200 lbs. The tractor pulls are held in conjunction with displays of latest farm equipment and supplies by close to 500 exhibitors. Legionaires defeat Little Britain 4-3 by Carol Wilbur In an exhibition game on Friday, Jan. 25th the Pee Wee Legionaires defeated Little Britain in a close 4-3 contest. Little Britain tallied first, Port tied the score at one, with a good shot from the slot by Lee Wilbur with assists going to Darren Cearns and Jeff Cockerton. Little Britan tallied to go ahead, but in the third period, Port scored 3 goals with Little Britain only TYE \; 2A 4, chalking up one. Obituary FREDERICK GOW A former employee at General Motors who retired ~ April 1, 1972, with 40 years service, Frederick Gow died at 211 Anderson St., Whitby, Wednesday, January 9, 1980. He has been in poor health for the past year. He lived at 673 Lansdowne Dr., Oshawa. Born October 29, 1907, on Scugog Island, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gow. He was married in Simcoe Street United Church. A resident of Oshawa most of his life, he was a member of Kingsview United Church, of the UAW and the UAW Retirees' Club. His wife, the former Verna Dresser Baker, died Septem- ber 27, 1975. He is survived by two daughters, Diane Baker, and Mrs. Wallace Spence (Janet) both of Oshawa; three sons, Ronald Baker of Orillia, Harold Baker of Toronto, and Kenneth Baker of Oshawa, a brother John Burnham of Port Perry and 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Mr. Gow rested at the Armstrong Funeral Home for Service held in the chapel Friday at 1:45 p.m., with interment in Mount Lawn Cemetery. Rev. Peter Lougheed officiated.
