LY Le ----tax LT Ll lL ant Durham Region council has approved a policy requiring some water customers to put up a security deposit equal to a water bill for six months. The council decision came on a recommendation from the Region's finance committee and is an effort to help protect Durham against unpaid sewer and water bills. The resolution says that security deposits will be required from new custom- ers "when there is no reason- able assurance of collection' and from existing customers who continually fall behind in payment of their water bill. A report to the council from finance commissioner Jack Gartley says that in the last four years, the Region has had to write off $116,000 in bad debts, and the collec- tion of a further $270,000 is considered "doubtful" at this time. Mr. Gartley says the Region has stepped up its efforts to collect outstanding bills in the past year, but the total continues to rise each year. Mr. Gartley:suggests in his report that it is unfair that customers who pay their bills on time have to also bear the brunt of the lost revenues from those who don't pay their bills. Although council went along with the recommen- dation, Pickering councillor PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., January 30, 1980 -- 23 approves new water deposit policy Ken Matheson expressed concern that if customers don't have the money to pay their bills, it is not likely they will have up to $100 for a security deposit. He wondered whether welfare offices would start getting requests from recipients for money to pay the deposit. Council also agreed at the meeting to increase from $5 to $10 the fee charged when a water service is turned back on after being shut off for non-payment of bills. =MASTERFEEDS ] SAVE TAX DOLLARS ON YOUR RRSP Our Best NO FEE Rates on demand 13% lyr.
