His passing is a great loss to his family, his colleagues, his students, many of whom affectionate- ly called him "Hooter", and a host of friends. Doug's friends include many from the Niagara area as well as from Newtonville and Scugog. Doug taught at the Welland High and Vocational School in the Math, Science, and Physical Education Departments from 1946-1949. Then he moved to Pelham where he taught Physical Education and Agriculture, taking the vice-principalship there in 1957 and the principalship in 1963. In 1965 he came to Port Perry as Head of Science, a position which he held for twelve years. Doug felt in returning to Port Perry he was "coming home', for he had spent a good part of his youth at Greenbank where his father served as the United Church minister. Born . at Sidney, in Hastings County, on Decem- ber 7th, 1918, Doug was the son of Thomas and Annie Wallace. The family later moved to Newtonville where Doug attended public school. He always spoke with affection of these happy years. Then the Wallace family moved again, this time to Greenbank. The manse at Greenbank was a lively place in those days. Doug and his brother George had five sisters - Hilda, Elsie, Grace, Ruby and Mabel. In the years that followed Doug attended high school at Port Perry and Uxbridge, at the same time il Chu rch THE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA Rev. R. In 1939 Doug went to Guelph to study at the Ontario Agricultural College. After graduation in 1943, he worked for two years as a chemist in Welland. In 1945 his life took a new and happy turn when he married Marilyn Horn of Buffalo, New York. This was also the year Doug decided to become a teacher. Doug and Marilyn have three children. Dianne, now Mrs. Bernard Chandler, is a kindergarten teacher at R.H. Cornish School. Dale is presently studying Forest Technology at Lakehead University. Darcy, who recently married Nancy Evans of Uxbridge, is a student of Business Administration at Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Doug is also survived by his brother George of Belleville and by his five sisters, Hilda Alexander and Elsie Shearer of Toronto, Grace Couch of Newcastle, Ruby Beare (Mrs. Geordie Beare) of .Greenbank, and Mabel Rowland of Toronto. After returning to Port Perry to live, Doug joined the Warriner Oddfellows Lodge where he was able to renew many friendships from his youth. As a teacher Doug cared for his students, setting high standards for them and helping them all he could. Many of his graduates who later attended university returned to thank him for the grounding he had given them and the emphasis he always placed on hard work and perseverance. Many people are thankful that their lives were touched by Doug Wallace. Services PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN CANADA Rev. Stuart McEntyre ST.
