. Former NDP member of parliament supports Fred McLaughlin campaign ® Fred McLaughlin, NDP candidate for Durham- Northumberland is getting some help in his campaign from the father of the Scugog NDP organizer, Marg Wilbur. Andrew Brewin, M.P. for Toronto Greenwood riding from 1962 to 1979, when he i retired, his wife Peggy, have | been visiting their daughter. Mr. Brewin spends a good \ deal of his time helping the | NDP candidate in the area he previously represented. But he also has found time to do some campaigning for | Mr. McLaughlin. On January 29th Mr. Brewin attended a reception for Mr. McLaughlin. As former NDP critic for | foreign affairs and defence he chose to speak on these subjects. i Mr. Brewin stated that the unprovoked attack by the U.S.S.R. armies on Afghani- stan was a breach of the Charter of the United Nations. It showed a dan- gerous contempt of the Rule of Law. He felt that Canada must therefore join in a campaign of sanctions to demonstrate that agression does not pay. He believed that any such campaign should involve cooperation between Canada and her associates in NATO. "However, Mr. Brewin stated, "we must not over- look that an open nuclear war could result in a tragedy for the whole world and its future. We must use every effort . to prevent such a catastrophe. This is no time for militaristic and ultra patriotic bombast. It is time for firm decisions but cool heads, for united actions and not ill-considered gestures.' Mr. Brewin also pointed out that the Clarke govern- ment had continued the Trudeau government's policy of spending billions on. useless fighter planes. He: stated that the NDP would re-examine our foreign and defence policy so that we could better cope with present and future problems.
