McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks almost gave it away, but rallied in the third period to defeat Port Hope Panthers 10-7 and square the best of five opening round play-off series at one game each. Playing in front of a good crowd at the Scugog Arena Sunday night, MoJacks built up a commanding 6-1 lead by the mid point of the second period, then ran into a string of penalties which allowed Panthers to draw within one goal by the opening minute of the final period. But a pair of markers late in the third by captain Bill Bridge and singletons by Phil Cochrane and Darrin Jobb cemented the victory for the MoJacks. The third game in the series will be played this Thursday night in Port Hope, and the two teams will meet again for the fourth game this Saturday evening at the Scugog Arena with a 7:00 P.M. face-off. The win Sunday night for the MoJacks was a crucial one, as Port Hope had taken the opener on Thursday night 10-9 in over-time. (See separate story.) For the first 30 minutes at the Scugog Arena, MoJacks looked like they would run the Panthers right out the back door as defenseman Bill Owen opened the scoring at 4:22 of the first with the teams playing five aside. Owen ripped a shot from the right point that seemed to go off a Panther stick in front of goalie Joe Pokusa. Phil Cochrane, who picked up eight points in the evening, netted his first at 14:33, flipping home a rebound on the short side, with Bridge and Rob Greiner drawing assists. Panthers Craig Jex was sitting out a cross-checking penalty at the time. Two minutes later, league scoring champ Grey Bullen pulled Panthers to within one goal when he was allowed to dipsydoodle in the MoJack zone before drifting a high shot that Ray Gibson juggled. MoJacks got two fast goals in the final minute. The first at 19:08 by Phil Cochrane was a weird one as Pokusa mis-judged a shot off the back-boards. Cochrane trapped the loose puck at the side of the goal, wheeled around and tucked it in the net. And with four seconds left, Owen took a pass from Coch- rane and drilled a shot from the right point that seemed to go right through Pokusa. Port Perry took the 4-1 lead into the dressing room, and were full marks for their efforts in the opening period. The second period was just 1:20 old when Darrin Jobb took a perfect pass from Rob pie A IRN A ow aA so El TRA RPI A QE RSIRALD SE FRASHINT ASR with Danny Millar TILA EL 0 , TLR fk "4 Ea S---- ¥ 4 The look on the faces tells the story after MoJacks Darrin Jobb while the puck lies in the crease behind goalie Joe Pokusa. MoJacks scored in the second period. Port Hope defender hangs his head evened the best of five series at one each with a 10-7 win over the Panthers on Sunday evening. Greiner and snapped a rising shot from the slot that Pokusa just waived at. Bill Owen got his first hat- trick of the season on the power play at 12:28 on a set up by Clark Menzies and Phil Cochrane, again on a hard screened shot from the right point. Owen has become the king-pin on the Port Perry power play, putting his hard slap shot to good use from the point position. MoJacks seemed to have the game in complete control at this point, but suddenly at 13:52 of the second, Shawn Wakely scored on a soft shot from inside the Port Perry blue line while MoJacks were a man short, as Mike Mitchell was sitting out the second half of a double minor for roughing and high-stick- ing. When Owen took an inter- ference penalty at 14:52, leaving MoJacks two men short, Wakely cashed in again for the Panthers, and at 16:30 Grant Jex made it 6-4 with Port Perry still play- ing with a man in the penalty box. Bill Bridge took a hooking penalty at 19:59 of the second and Panthers drew to within one goal at the 54 second mark of the third after Terry Watts teamed with Grant Jex and David Smith. Darrin Jobb made it 7-5 at the 5:41 mark on a two on one break using Bridge as a decoy, and scoring with a shot between Pokusa's legs. But a minute later, Terry Watt narrowed the lead to 7-6 as he drilled a high, hard shot from the left side that just caught the corner of the net. Phil Cochrane made it 8-6 when he slapped home a rebound from a sharp angle after Pokusa had made the original save, and at 11:46 Bridge put the game on ice when he flipped home a rebound, also from the short side. Port Perry ran into more penalty problems at the 12:00 minute mark when Steve Jones was sent off for tripping, and then Bridge was nailed for the same call a minute later, on what looked like an innocent play in the neutral zone. However, the penalty killing unit bottled Port Hope up until the 15:34 mark when Panther Dale Sidey took a cross-checking penalty, and an additional minor for unsportsmanlike conduct Bridge put the MoJacks into double figures at 17:03 with a power play goal that came after Port Perry had swarmed around the Pan- ther net, putting a lot of pressure on Neil Palmer. He had replaced Pokusa who was shaken up in a goal- mouth collision with the MoJacks burly Rob Garrow. With 11 seconds left, Panthers scored their fourth power play goal of the night as Sidey found the range with Mitchell serving a slashing penalty. MoJacks were easily the better of the two clubs when the teams were playing at full strength, but Panthers took full advantage of their power play opportunities, netting four goals. Port Perry enjoyed a substantial edge in territorial play and out-shot the visitors by a 35 to 27 margin. MoJacks were called for 26 minutes in penalties, while the Panthers took nine minors. Captain Bill Bridge had probably his best game this season with two goals and two assists. He saw a lot of ice time, killing penalties and was double shifted to shadow scoring champion Grey Bullen who is the key to the Panther attack. While Bullen did manage to net the first two goals for his team, he seemed to run out of steam in the later stages of the game. Along the Port Perry blue line, Owen, Chic Tyson and Steve Jones had good games. When Greg Dwyer took ill, John Robertson saw regular duty, turning in a solid, heads-up performance against the potent Port Hope attackers. Darrin Jobb was moved up to left wing, and he had one of his better games this year, netting two goals and throw- ing his weight around effec- tively. Game three in this series goes Thursday at 8:00 P.M. in the Port Hope Arena, and the two teams clash again for the fourth game this Saturday evening with face- off at 7:00 P.M. in the Scugog Arena.
