hod A summary of the major findings of a 1978 national survey on the smoking ha- bits of Canadian school children was released last' week by the Office of Health and Welfare Minister David Crombie. The survey covered all stu-y dents in grades three to 13 in 409 schools, selected to be representative of the 14,000 such schools in Canada. An appropriate number of both elementary and secondary schools was ineluded from each province and from urban 105,788 students responded to the survey questionnaire. The survey revealed that by age 12, one half of Canadian school children have at least tried smoking. By age 14. 15% of boys and 20% of girls are daily smokers and by age 17 these figures have increased to 27% of boys and 30% of girls. Beyond this age, the proportions of students who reported daily smoking did not change significantly. The figures showed some indica- tions that boys who smoke than girls. In grades 3 and over, having students aged 8 to 19, 47% reported never having smoked at all. The statistics showed that children with non-smoking parents were somewhat less likely to be regular smokers themselves than those with one or two parents who smoke. A more substantial relation- ship was shown to exist bet- ween the smoking habits of _ school children and their fri- ends, for both boys and girls.
