- Uxbridge PeeWee trounce Port Perry PeeWee B 8-1 by Danny Millar The Port Perry Pee Wee B hockey team, sponsored by Stone Realtor, became one of the few teams to lose an opening playoff game to Uxbridge when they were pounded by Uxbridge to the tune of 8-1 at home, Saturday February 2. Wade Swallow led the Uxbridge scoring charge with three goals. He was the only player to score more than one goal, evidence of the well balanced Uxbridge team. Karl Durham replied for Port Perry. Port started goalie Paul Goreski but later went to Chris Cookman. Goreski was between the pipes when Keith Lotton scored the first Uxbridge goal with just 41 seconds left in the first period. Lotton took a pass from Swallow, who was situated behind the Port net, and spun around, sliding a backhander beneath the goaltender. The first period was a rather strange one. The tempo of the play was very fast but there was not an abundance of good scoring opportunities. There were a lot of giveaways by both teams as they neared the other's goal area. Mike Dickson and Willy Edwards missed chances to tie even the score in the first minute. of .the second period when Dickson banged a shot off the post and Edwards missed the rebound. It was one of the few honest oppor- tunities that the home team got in a period that was totally dominated by Uxbridge. Centerman Swallow scored his first goal at 2:20 on a one on one rush after Dickson had been checked and lost possession of the puck at center ice. His wrist shot sailed high into the top of the net. Defenceman Jeff Vance gave Uxbridge a 3-0 lead at 4:27 with a bouncing shot from the point went through a crowd and past Goreski. Goreski was beaten just over a minute later by a shot from the boards deep in the Port zone. Chris Sproule made it 5-0 when he beat another Port defenceman on a one on one to score. The second was a costly period for Port Perry's Mike Fluke. He took a slashing penalty, then threw his stick into the penalty bench, took an unsportsmanlike conduct call for that, and then a ten minute misconduct. Durham got the tinal goal MoJacks From page 10 Grant Jex and Bob Croll replied for the Panthers. In the final two games of the series, MoJacks succeed- ed in keeping league scoring champ Grey Bullen off the score-board as he didn't manage a point on Saturday night, and picked up just two assists on Sunday evening. Throughout the series Panther coach Bill Bullen had Dale Sidey shadowing Phil Cochrane, and while Sidey hacked and chopped away at the MoJack forward Cochrane managed to pick up eight points in the final two games. The three losses in the Port Hope Arena during the play- off series was indicative of the MoJacks' problems on the road all season long, as the team lost 14 of 19 games away from the Scugog Arena. The turning point in the Port Hope series probably goes back to game one in Port Hope when the teams went into overtime and Panthers snuck away with a 10-9 victory. An Important Reminder! Dickson had bad luck again early in the third period when he fired another shot off the cross bar. Swallow scored twice in the last 15 minute frame, his second coming with 2:42 remaining after he picked up a loose puck in front of the Port net and deked replace- ment Cookman. Brad Smyth got the final goal of the contest when he scored on a ten-foot shot after a Port Perry giveaway. are out! Penalties hurt the MoJacks throughout the series, especially in the final game Sunday night, as they put the team in an early hole, forcing MoJacks to play catch-up hockey throughout the game. Although the MoJacks played well enough in the final game, and with a break or two could have beaten the Panthers, the overall season was marked by inconsis- tency. The club also had its share of locker room turmoil over some of the strategies and tactics of coach Doug Scott, and this carried right into the playoff series. Nevertheless, the players had nothing to be ashamed about in the series, as they pushed the Panthers down to the final seconds of the final game before bowing out. Panthers now meet Bowmanville Eagles in a best of seven semi finals while the Cobourg Cougars tackle the rough Lindsay Muskies in the other semi- finals. Lindsay beat Stouffville 12-7 in the final game of their best of five series Sunday afternoon in Stouffville. Belle bombers lose to Whitby by Judy Young Children's Boutique's Belle Bombers played an invitational game in Whitby on Sunday, Feb. 10th 1980 losing 10-4. It was a good fast clean game with Whitby outshoot- ing Port 28-23. Scoring statistics for Port were Karen Young 2 goals and one assist; Daphne Butt one goal; Sherri Allen one goal, Cheryl Doherty 2 assists and Wendy "Mac" one assist. Port's play between the blue lines was not sharp and so we'll work a whole lot in that area before we meet Whitby in the playoffs and the Regionals. Sportsman- ship award to Sherri Allen for her retrieval of the ring.
