The men's open spiel atttracted some good rinks and the competition was reported to be Lakers in the second half. At one point in the third period Roberts had three shots before they scored. This also happened on at least one other occasion. Eight quick points from Patton and George Cop drew the Rebels to within two points in the last minute of the third quar- ter. And then a half court "Hail Mary" shot by Jerry Fitzgerald that went in gave the Lakers a 37-33. The shot seemed to demoralize the Rebels as they couldn't generate a con- sistent offence in the final eight minutes. Roberts went into a four corner defensive stall in the final minutes. Patton, Cope, and Bob Ire- land all fouled out in the final minute. Cope and Patton led the team in scoring with 18 and 14 points respectively. The junior Rebels were without starting guard Todd Wilbur who was ill and so they brought up Young and Phillips from the midget squad. Young saw little action while Phillips rode the bench. John Butler and Peter Christie started together in the backcourt, an unfamiliar position for Christie.
