On Tues- day, Feb. 12, the hometown Uxbridge team doubled Port Perry Emiel's Place 6-3 to even the opening round at two games each. Uxbridge took the opener 3-2 but Port Perry came back with 4-2 and 7-2 decisions. The Port Perry lineup has been bolstered by Junior C players Rob Kemp and Rob Cannon. Kemp was a stand- out on the blueline as he helped to lead the offence. Cannon used his excellent speed to score a break away goal in the second period. Tim Thompson, the Port Perry captain, opened the scoring on a sharp play at 1:14 of the first period. Thompson set himself at the edge of the crease and then gave a pass to Dave Dickson Broncos drop Uxbridge by Danny Millar Uxbridge Midget B's and the Port Perry Ball Motors Broncos played to a 1-1 draw on Monday, February 11, but the result was good enough to eliminate the visiting Uxbridge squad because of an earlier setback at the hands of the Broncos. The two teams were in a round robin series with Pickering and Uxbridge, having lost both games previously, became the odd team out. Pickering and Port tangle in their own series coming up this week. Todd Healey of Port Perry and Mike Horne were the goal scorers. Both markers came in the second period. Healey got his on an assist 2:30 into the frame and Horne connected just fifteen seconds later on a shot from the face-off circle going through Port Perry goaler Peter Christie's legs. The game was a goalten- ders duel between Christie, who was a standout in the first game against Uxbridge BOBBY ADAMS 1 behind the net. Dickson returned the pass and Thompson slipped the puck under Uxbridge goalie Larry Comer. Grant Curnow led Uxbridge with two goals and a pair of assists while line- mate Rick Bayard added three assists. These two athletes combined with Owen Jackson to form a potent scoring line. Todd McIntyre scored the first goal for Uxbridge at 4:17 on a rebound from Curnow's shot when Mark Cleveland couldn't hold onto the puck in front of his own net. McIntyre stole it from Cleveland and fired it over Warren Nicholishen, the man who tended goal for Port. A rink wide passing play between Vic MacMillan and Brett Ellis set up the second Uxbridge goal. Ellis fired a low hard drive into the net when Port Perry recorded a 3-1 win, and Kevin Rise- brough of Uxbridge. Risebrough made the first tough stop in the last minute of the opening period whe he foiled John Butler after Butler got around defence- man Brad Ellis. Uxbridge took its best shots at Christie four min- utes into the second period with Bronco Keith Trembley in the penalty box for trip- ping. Christie blocked at least two hard shots, one from Pat Taylor in close. Uxbridge threatened again past Nicholishen at 4:52 of the quick first period. Curnow scored the third Uxbridge goal of the first period when he shoved the rebound under the Port Perry puck stopper after Jackson had been stopped on a breakaway. Bayard picked up his second assist on the play. At the 2:55 mark of the second period defenceman Scott Heard of Port was thrown out of the game when he delivered a two handed slash on the legs of an Uxbridge player who had just broken into the clear behind Heard. Heard was given a total of seven minutes in penalties which was served by Rowen Kennedy. Cannon scored shorthand- ed on this infraction at 4:51 when he stole the puck from Uxbridge defenceman John Clarke at the Port blue line. He beat Comer for the Midgets B five minutes into the final segment on another Bronco minor, this time to Mike Farrell. Port Perry got its final opportunities in the dying minutes when Ellis tripped Scott Wallace as he was breaking into the clear. Uxbridge realized that a tie would be of no use to them and removed Risebrough in favour of an extra attacker in the final minute. Port has already lost both of its games against Picker- ing in the initial stage of the playdowns. Novice tie Port Hope On Saturday, Feb. 16, the Pierce Auctioneers hosted Port Hope and ended up in a 2-2 tie. . This was a tight end to end game with very few shots on net for either team. The boys displayed good skating and passing skills but couldn't get a break for the winning goal, as we had many chances. He took a shot on net where Shane Wark waited in front for the rebound and put us ahead 2-1. In the last minute of the second period, Port Hope equalized the score. The final ten minutes saw both teams keeping a close watch offensively resulting in a scoreless third period. Game standings show the Pierce Auctioneers seem to display better results away from home. 14 games have been won away with 6 losses, while 3 wins, 3 ties, and 7 losses nn home ice. Mike Tobin was the only defender in position when MacMillan scored off a rebound from Jackson. That was the third goal by Uxbridge that came about as a result of the defence's inability to clear the puck. This is an area that Kemp should help solidify. Kemp gives the team three strong backliners along with Heard and Craig Mullen. Tobin also plays well in that position. Port Perry ran into a handful of senseless penalties in the final session and they were fortunate in that it cost them only one goal Curnow scored it while Rick Wallace and Dave Canning were in the box. Jackson was taken out of the game with 6:42 left when he was dropped by a clean check from Dickson in the Port Perry zone. He was down for a couple of minutes before leaving under his own steam nursing a shoulder. It was the second resounding check of the night from 'straight minor Dickson, who labelled an Uxbridge player at center ice in the first period. In quick succession, with less than six minutes to be played, Port ran into four infractions that they managed to kill off. Thompson took one for high sticking and then unsports- manlike conduct and Tobin followed for roughing. Wallace got the last one for slashing. Thompson had the honour of scoring the first and last goals of the contest when his slap shot eluded Comer with nine seconds to go. FHH8023B <
