Each game consisted of two 15 minute periods with the last five minute stop time and the overtime periods were five minutes. Total goals scored wins. The league was proud to have some of the finest teams in the province enter and they responded by put- ting on some good perfor- mances for the spectators. Provincially ranked number one, Ottawa's Sun Life met number two ranked Simcoe's Ivy Rangers in a head to head contest for the "A" division championship. Last year in the Provincial's Sun Life beat Ivy 1-0 in overtime in their first game and at the end of the tour when Ivy had lost six players Sun Life came out on top 3-0. This game displayed fine ball control and passing by both clubs resulting in a 0-0 dead- lock in regulation time. In the overtime with four men aside Sun Life showed their superiority as D. Campbell with three assists and two goals led his mates to a 5t win. This score wasn't really indicative of the game, because as I said hgfore these two teams were evenly matched in their skills and play during regulation time. B Division In the "B"' division cham- pionships our own third place Beacock's Hardware bowed to a superior Trenton Merchants team 4-2. Trenton struck first in the game, but Beacock's battled back to tie it two minutes later. It looked like it was going to be a close one, but Beacock's took a couple of minor penalties which proved costly as the Mer- chants ran the score up to 4-1 with a minute left in the first period. With 29 seconds to go in the period, Steve Hawes checked a Trenton player in front of his net, knocking the ball in, to close the gap to two goals. Try as they might in the second Beacock's could not get back into it as both teams were kept off the score sheet. The other Blackstock scorer was Donnie Toutant from Steve Hawes. Beacock's were the last and first Port Perry team to play in the tour as they got started early in the morning losing to Oshawa's Carlo's 3-2. The Carlo's took the early lead but Beacocks replied with two as Gary Toutant assisted on both goals by David and Keith Dalton. Carlo's came back and scored their final goal with just 29 seconds to go when overtime looked imminent. The next Port Perry team to, perform was Brian's Towing who took on the Simcoe County Hornets. Both teams stuck close to each other in a game that saw each team take one penalty. In the close check- ing Brian's held off the Hornets on their lone power- play, but with two minutes to play in the game Brian's found themselves with a power-play. Just seven seconds later Bill Peeters connected from Greg Hilder- brande to give Brian's the win and a chance to play the Ivy Rangers who had earlier beaten the Oshawa Generals 4-1. Cobourg's Plaza Hotel, who just joined the OB this season and who I thought were a better team than they showed, just squeaked past Emmerson's Insurance 1-0. Plaza struck early in the first period for their lone goal and although neither team went into a defensive shell there were no more goals to be had. Due to a lack of participation on some team members, Emmerson's put into effect the pick-up contract right and took three players from Oshawa with them, who helped strengthen them offensively. Utica nipped Utica Plow Jockeys drew Sun Life for the first game and thanks to a strong defense on an asleep Sun Life offense it was a close one. Utica drew first blood as big Jack Monsma scored the lone goal of the first period on a breakaway pass from Mike Mole. Sun Life sparked to life in the second and took a 2-1 lead until with one minute to play Monsma again scored to tie it up with the assist going to Ken Geer. With 34 seconds to play Sun Life pulled it out of the bag as they beat Don Card who had made some spectacular saves, to win it 3-2. The boys had nothing to be ashamed of in this. one. In the C & B Merchants game, some of C & B's lesser players had to pick up the slack as top players such as Rob Evans, Don Phinney and Ron Redman missed playing in the tourney due to injuries and illness. With the addition of Ken Davidson on the defence, Keith Fraser earned a shut out as they beat the Merchants 1-0. The first period went scoreless and it wasn't until the 9:30 mark of the second that Bruce Woodrow put the marker on the scoreboard on a set-up in front from Kevin Martens. Heavy hitting The sixth team in our league to play was Larocque Electric who were matched up against Pauleyanna Sports of Innisfil. Both of these teams have some big players and there was a lot of hard hitting especially between the two blue lines in the centre ice area. Kevin Beer played a strong game in the nets for Larocque stop- ping all but one of Pauley- anna's shots. Led by captain Bill Bridge and Kopie DeJong Larocque's offence tried vainly to knot the score but were stumped on numerous occasions and went down to deféat 1-0. In the second round Bea- cock's took a 2-0 lead over Radman from Oshawa on goals by Dave Dalton from Tom Wotten and Donnie Toutant from Steve Hawes before Oshawa got one back at the end of the first. With 1:51 to play Beacock"s took a two goal lead again when Steve Hawes deflected in a shot from Phil Archer. To add insult to injury Ron Wagg scored from Wayne (Turn to page 16) of the Port Perry League for the consolation honours, Trenton Merchants battled Beacock's Hardware and finally won the match by the score of 4-2. © Goal mouth scrambles presented lots of action their fair share of headaches. and excitement, and gave the guys between the pipes » 1 In many of the contests, the checking was so close , come by. And when a goal finally was scored, players and teams evenly matched that goals were hard to reacted jubilantly. ATA SR
