PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., February 20, 1980 -- 15 "Hawks edge Senior Rebels 49-46 by Danny Millar It was a bad week all around for the Port Perry High School basketball teams. In total, Rebel squads won just two of seven contests. Perhaps the team with the. most misfortune was the Senior unit /as it lost two of three games. They were edged 49-46 by the Henry Street Hawks of Whitby on Friday, February 15 at Durham College. It marked the final game in LOSSA triple A league play for the seniors. They finished at seven wins and three losses. Last year, LOSSA and COSSA championship winners wre 10-1 through the Pacers (From page 10) passed the puck over to Kent Jordan, who slipped it in with just seven seconds left. Uxbridge used a strong forechecking system to keep Port Perry locked in its own end during the game, but the best frame for the Pacers was the second as they out- scored their rivals 2-0 on goals by Brian Mikkelson and newly signed Donny Young. Young is the spark that ignites the Bantam team and he was signed by" the Pacers for the playdowns. E Port got two penalties in the early going of the second period forcing Lovering to come up with three saves, two of them on Doug Harri- son. Mikkelson scored four seconds after the mid-way point of the match after Todd Wilbur and he combined on a rush from center. Young got the second Pacer goal with 2:27 remain- ing and the teams playing five aside. Sean Fewer let a slap shot go from the point and Young redirected it into the net. It came on a delayed penalty call as Lovering was en route to his team's bench for an extra shooter. Lovering was caught off guard on the fourth Uxbridge goal, which came 3:27 into the third period. Greg Paradine stepped over the blue line and uncorked a long slap shot to score on a low shot. The Pacers looked as though they might take it right down to the wire on back to back goals by Pat Johnson and Joe Williams. Johnson's came on a power play with Harrison off. He scored on another slapper after taking a pass from defenceman Todd Blayone. Lovering was beaten by another long shot as Uxbridge stormed back after the Williams marker tied the score. Defenceman Ken Davis fired from the point and the shot went in off Lovering's glove. With 3:29 left Milroy got one insurance goal on a tip in from the front of the net, following a Jordan shot. Dave Mills put his signature on the insurance policy with 2:44 left with a backhand shot on a rebound as Lover- ing was down. This Uxbridge midget squad was the same one that completed a successful tour overseas during the Christmas holidays. They also are one of the rare teams to have the player's surnames on the backs of the jerseys. season. This year there were decision losses to O'Neill and GL Roberts besides the Henry Street loss. Henry Street handed Port Perry its only loss in the league last year. Larry Chizen, one of the best shooting guards in LOSSA circuit, lead the Hawks in their final win with 20 points. But the real killer as far as the Rebels were concerned were four conver- ted foul shots in the last minute of play. It spelled the margin of victory. One bad quarter of play did not help the Rebels cause. They were outscored 12-4 in the third period after leading by three points at half time. There was only 1:21 to go in the eight minute frame when Dave Dickson banked in a shot to get Port [LL] DETERGENTS LIM 2 vir DETERGENTS owe T0RONT0 ONTARD [YTLURLL) Perry's first two points of the second half. Both teams were in bonus trouble early in the second half. Whitby accumulated its fifth team foul with seven seconds left in the third quarter and Port Perry got its first bonus foul situation 24 seconds into the fourth quarter. Also a major concern for the Rebels was that George Cope picked up his fourth personal foul early in the concluding quarter. The Rebels gave it a good try before the final buzzer sounded throughout the excellent College facilities. Curt Pinkowski hit a long range jumper with 3:41 to go after Port had chipped away at the Henry lead to climb back to within two points. Cope went to the foul line with 1:23 left trailing 44-40 and scored on one shot. In the final minute, the teams exchanged field goals before Henry put the game on ice with the foul shots. The first quarter ended up tied at 14 in what was a fast teammate with double figure scoring as he tossed in ten points. Chizen and Ed Derks combined for 30 points to top the Hawks. Port Perry definitely will not finish any higher than third place in the ten team league, behind Henry Street and Pickering. They will not place any lower than fifth spot, depending on the out- come of other games. paced session. Port Perry managed a three point lead in the second, to take a 29-26 half time advantage. Pinkowski was shaken up in the second quarter with 5:29 remaining. He did not come out of the game be- cause he was having a very Body checks (From page 10) youngsters knocking into each other, and that the hesitancy and inconsistency in these judgement calls brings about frustration among the coaches and \ players. Perhaps this is true but I think that more good game grabbing often than not there is a real difference between the rebounds. He did come out two. with 48 seconds left in favour of Bob Ireland. It was the only time during the first half that a Port Perry player substituted into the fray. George Cope led the Maybe it is too late to have the rule change prohibiting the body check implemented for this year. Possibly an addendum can be inserted in the PPMHA Constitution outlawing it in time for this year's playoffs, which begin in two weeks, but the odds are stacked against the happening. Nevertheless, I hope Rebels with 19 points and Pinkowski was the only other the new powers that be can bring it about next year.
