NDP forms Scugog Association NDP workers in the recent federal election met at their campaign headquarters Saturday, Feb. 23. Organizer Marg Wilbur thanked everyone for their efforts on behalf of Fred McLaughlin. She noted that the NDP vote in Scugog Township had increased from 21 percent to over 26 percent. Despite the Liberal surge elsewhere the NDP was the only party to substantially increase its vote in Scugog Township. The workers noted that the NDP had come second in the last provincial election. They agreed that they should now turn their attention to the provincial level. As many new supporters and workers had been active during the election campaign it was decided to form an NDP Association for Scugog. Roy Grierson was elected President and Inge Zilkalns, Secretary. The NDP in Scugog Town- ship has four representatives "on the Durham York execu- tive, Marg Wilbur, Genevieve Ausman, Jack Davidchuk and Heather Gibson. 'Cedar Creek by George Kilpatrick The results of Poll 3 at Cedar Creek on Monday were Lawrence 74, Marttila 1, McLaughlin 46, Platt 0, Schamerhorn 46, no split ballots. Irene Moore was D.R.O. Mae Buller was Poll Clerk. Candidates agents were Doug Buller, Lucy Wilson, Don Scott and George Kilpatrick. Mr. and Mrs. John Phillips Lea and Lisa of Shirley Road were Saturday evening visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Vic Larocque. George Kilpatrick visited Bob Henstock and Phillip in Oshawa on Saturday. Mrs. Henstock was visiting her sister, Miss Laura Porter in New York for the weekend. Yelverton area news by Harvey Malcolm Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. James Gray on the safe arrival recently of their second grandson and 5th grandchild courtesy of their daughter Linda, Mr. and * Mrs. Randy Longfield of ; Brampton. Your Yelverton scribe has - been somewhat delinquent in sending in area news this ' past week or so. The reason- - we have just returned home from spending a few days with our first mates '"Tulip picking' relatives in Holland. These included Corrie's mother Mrs. Henk Boon, her sister, Tieny, and Mr. and Mrs. John Bakker and family. It was rather amusing if confusing to be awakened on our first morning in Holland by the sultry tones of Tony Tenille imploring someone (probab- ly the Captain) to do it to her one more time, over the local radio station. The weather was like a day in April in Ontario, the grass was green all over, livestock, sheep and young Holsteins were out and pasture water- fowl were swimming in the canals. We were amazed by the number of automobiles - all compacts and by the variety of models, around 25 different makes, from almost every industrial country in the world. One of the reasons for the smaller cars besides that of narrow streets and scarcity of off street parking (cars are parked up on the sidewalks as matter of course) is the price of gasoline. Whereas Little Joe scared the daylights out of everyone with his 18 cent gas hike and contributed to his own politi- cal demise, gas in Holland is currently selling at the pumps at $1.37 per guilders per litre or approximately 6 guilders per gallon or at current exchange rates equals three dollars and sixty-five cents a gallon. There was little evidence of unemployment and the economy appeared to be in fair shape. The results of the Canadian election took a prominent place on the T.V. news coverage. Congratulations are extended to our local successful candidate, Mr. Allan Lawrence and condolences to those who also ran. Perhaps in the near or distance future the two old line parties when they hold their Leadership Convention, they might draft Ed Broadbent from the N.D.P. Just an idea! &
