Last Wednesday Mrs. Lewis Swain passed away in Port Perry Hospital. Many of this area have been in hospital recently. On the sick list are Mrs. W. Archer, Ivan Thompson, Mrs. Frank Bailey, John Baumchen and Ray Suggitt. Recently the Cartwright Central Public School, like most other local schools has been holding Public Speak- ing contests. Winners in the Senior Classes were Craig Paisley who spoke on B.A .- his broken arm and 2-Mike McDiarmid with his speech on Mud. The Junior Winners were 1-Joy Werry who spoke on a Day without Electricity. 2-Claire McKenzie who spoke on Time. On Thursday Feb. 21 Craig proceeded to the Central Durham Public Speaking Finals held in the Cartwright Public School to win first. Congratulations on his fine standing. Second prize went to Jo-Anne DeVries from Thorah Cental Public School. This Thurs- day night Craig will enter the Durham Region Public Speaking contest which will be held in Henry Street School, Whitby. Good luck on this endeavor. On Sunday afternoon three Cartwright Public Speakers participated in the Legion Contest at Port Perry and all three won first prize in their own classes. Joy Werry was in the Grade 4,5 and 6 class; Craig Paisley in the Grade 7 and 8 and Pat Reader in the Grade 11-12. She spoke on My Public Speeches through the Years. These three contest- ants go on to Uxbridge on March 9. Congratulations. We are proud of you all.
