The two losses mean that Port has its back to the wall. Lakefield needs only one more win, which could come this Wednesday, to wrap up the series. The third game of the set saw Port Perry edged 6-5 in - overtime after taking two goal leads on two occasions. Center-defenceman Donny Young and defenceman Vaughn McKee saw extra duty and both were outstand- ing with the heavy workload. Young was the recipient of a close checking game play by Lakefield, many of the checks bordering the line between legal and illegal. On one particular play late in the opening period, Young was tripped, elbowed and slashed all within the space of ten seconds. There was no penalty called. Lakefield played a more aggressive game in their home rink then they did in the opener played in the spacious Port Perry New Arena. The Lakefield arena has a much smaller--ice surface, which should be more convenient for a hard hitting approach. Port Perry opened the scoring with John Redpath in the box for roughing Young. Young put Port Perry ahead 2-0 when he went around defender Doug Coyle with a burst of speed and deked goaltender Bob Malin down and tipped the puck over him. Rob Gilders put Lake- field back in the match when he skated down the left wing, on a two on one with McKee caught up ice, and fired a slap shot past Ken Harman. It came with 5:25 remaining. Young got his second of the night when he drove a slap shot into the net from the top of the slot area with 2:20 to go in the Port domin- ated first period. Lakefield turned it around in the second period, scoring first on a power play when Port was called for too many men on a deflection off Kevin Fergusson's stick. Lakefield really pressured after the goal but Harman came up with a few key saves. They tied the score on a shot from the point with the teams playing five aside. Jamie Lane played a strong game for Port Perry. He put them back in the lead at 10:22 on a picturesque goal. He slid around the defence and then deked Galin before shoving in a backhander. Port Perry carried a precarious one goal lead into the third period and held it for 12:47. At that time, Lakefield managed to shove a rebound past Harman dur- ing a scramble. Lakefield took the lead for the first time in the fast paced contest when Coyle rifled in a cross rink pass from Gilders with 4:50 to go in the ten minute extra session. The rink skipped by Murray Lee captured the annual mens open bonspiel sponsored by George Stone Real Estate. The event was held Saturday at Port With 3:22 left, Young scored a fluke goal to tie it again. His shot dribbled in from the blue line but some how Malin missed it. McKee made a superb defensive play when he bat- ted away a sure goal with his glove. The shot bounced up over Harman's stick and was headed for the open net. McKee gave the puck away trying to clear it from his own end and that miscue allowed Gilders to fire in a shot from the blue line with just 16 seconds to go. Port Perry's win in the initial game of the series was equally exciting. "I was even excited for a change", said Port Perry coach Doug Scott. Scott is generally very reserved behind the bench, the most emotion he shows might be a smile after a goal scored by his team. Port went into the last frame trailing 5-2 before Young, who along with Har- man, drew the praise of his coach after the game, scored three goals on one shift in a 62 second span. Young got the first one on a strange play that no one but himself saw go in. He netted his third at 3:47. Count 'em--three goals in 62 seconds. Kevin Trapp head- manned the puck to Young at his own blue line and Young did the rest, to score the winning goal with 9:33 to go. Young went by the defence and then tried to get the puck around Malin after he had fallen trying to defend the deke. But Young had steered too wide of the net, so he took one step back in front and flipped it in. Jamie Lane and Fergus- son had the Port Perry goals earlier. Gilders scored twice for Lakefield while Coyle and Ridpath had one each.
