Regional Championship by Danny Millar Port Perry Malmont Farms Atoms came up with two very impressive wins over Brighton last week to take the Eastern Regional hockey championship plaque. On Monday, March 24, they won 4-1 and then completed the three game sweep on Friday, March 28 with a 6-2 victory. The Atoms do not have a provincial round, so this is as far as they go. After the title winning match, district convenor Ed 'Grimshaw handed the plaque to Port captain, Dave Burnett. He also had one for Brighton. _ Over the final two games Port showed excellent scoring depth. In the first game four different players did the scoring and in the second one player tallied more than once. John Lally played a strong final game, scoring twice, and assisting once. His goals were the third and fourth in the Port offensive. Brighton opened the scoring while they were shorthanded with 1:38 remaining in the first period, a session that Port Perry dominated. Paul Kirk slipp- ed a shot past Stacey Ballin- gall that caught a corner of the net. The opening marker gall that caught a corner of the net. The opening goal marked the first time in the series that Brighton had taken a lead. Port tied it up during the same penalty when Brad Menzies backhanded a shot into the net with 49 seconds to go in the first period. It glanced in off goaltender Scott Chamber's glove after Brighton clearing attempts failed. John Lally and Bobby Goble assisted. Early through the second period Burnett put Port into the lead with an unassisted goal. Lally got the first of his pair with 2:36 gone in the second on a play that makes coaches hair turn grey prematurely. Lally went down the right wing on a three man breakaway but instead of passing the puck to either forward who were in better scoring position, he "elected to keep the puck and cut in front of the net and put a neat wrist shot into the far corner. Stephen Whalen came in to relieve Ballingall between the pipes with 4:39 to go in the ten minute second period. Both netminders performed well during the game and the entire series. Lally scored 1:46 into the final period after receiving a pass in front of the net and backhanding it behind Chambers. Blair Phillips got the fifth goal for Port on a shot from the blue line as Ray Daniels won a draw and fed him the puck. Brighton's top performer in the series, Chris Twitchett got the second goal for his team 2:57 into the segment. He scored on an excellent wrist shot on a four on two rush. Phillips was in the sin bin at the time, guilty of elbowing. John Harman got the final goal for Port Perry when he tipped in a pass at the edge of the crease from Goble. Goble had initially taken a pass into the zone from Steve Durham. Port Perry also performed well in the second game of the set Monday night. Lally, Dave Culbert, Harman, and Durham were the goal getters for Port, as they played a tougher defensive game than in the opening 7-5 win. Lally opened the scoring with 1:05 gone in the initial session when he deked to his backhand and put it in. Warren Geer drew the assist. Late in the period Brighton got its only goal on a power play. Brett Durk scored it on a rebound after Twitchett's first attempt was blocked by Ballingall. They play start- ed with a pass from behind the net by David Gerresse. There was no scoring in the second period as it appeared as though Brighton was ready to give Port a tough fight, going into the last 15 minutes tied 1-1. It really didn't turn out that way as Port posted three goals to take the game. Culbert got the go ahead tally with 5:56 yet to be 8, contested when he carried the puck in from the corner and slipped it under goaler Adrian Gregg. Harman got the insurance marker with 4:09 left when the defence lost possession of the puck in front on their own net and Harman slipped it in. Durham went around defenceman Danny Creight- on and then lofted in a wrist shot at 13:24 to finish off the scoring. Robbie Baker got the assist. Port Perry coach Dave Barkey was very pleased Sports with the championship. After the game he was asked if it was everything he thought it would be. 'Yes, it is," he stated, 'the guys there did the job.' He under- standably declined to name any particular player who attributed the most, saying "I feel the whole team did the job." Port Perry went through the playoff round with. ten straight victories, never" tasting defeat. They finished the year with 42 wins in 55 games. The following morning we played Don Mills and lost to a close 2-1 game. Mikg, Sorley scored with Matt Durward earning the assist. This was also another fine performance the Pearse Auctioneers gave. We didn't let Don Mills away easily. Port was in their end zone most of the game but unfortunately couldn't get that break. However on to the last game of the day against Newmar- ket. Port was downed by a near 1-0 score. This was Newmarket's A team and® the Pearse Auctioneers had difficulty clearing the puck out of their end zone but again they made Newmarket fight hard for their win.
