Vol. 114 No. 20 Wednesday, April 9, 1980 3 Pages Newman calls it quits as Durham. York MPP After 13 years in the pro- vincial legislature, Durham- York MPP Bill Newman is calling it quits. Citing health reason, Mr. Newman told the annual meeting of the Conservative riding association in Udora last week that he will not seek the nomination when the next provincial election is called. In an interview after the meeting, Mr. Newman said that after all his years in municipal and provincial politics, "it was a difficult night for me." - But I felt it was only right to make the announcement at the annual meeting to the people who have Supported me.' Mr. Newman was first elected to the legislature in - the riding of Ontario South in 1967. With re-distribution, he was re-elected in 1975 to the riding of Durham-York, and again in the last provincial election in June, 1977. During his time in the legislature, Mr. Newman served as parliamentary assistant to the minister of transportation and com- munications. He held two cabinet port- folios: ministry of the envi- ronment, and ministry of WILLIAM NEWMAN agriculture. He gave up this last portfolio about a year ago when he developed ser- ious health problems. Mr. Newman suffered a heart attack a year ago last month, and was hospitalized again last June. He told the Star his decision not to seek re-election was on the advice of his doctors, and there is a possibility he may require an operation in the not too distant future. Mr. Newman's future as a politician had been in doubt qn z it = A Te Le Easter Sunday accident A Mississauga man was fortunate to escape with his life after the car he was driving went out of control Sunday evening near Blackstock and landed on its since last summer when he stepped down as minister of agriculture because of health reasons. However, in recent weeks there had been some specu- lation that he would not be stepping down as Durham- York MPP when the next election is called. His an- nouncement last week put an end to that speculation. Commenting on the pos- sibility of an election this summer or fall, Mr. New- man said he doesn't think the people of Ontario want one, and the Conservative party would like to wait until the term expires at the end of 1981. However, the provincial Liberals have served notice they will attempt to bring down the minority govern- ment of William Davis, and with a budget due at the end of this month, the Liberals almost certainly will be seeking support from the New Democrats on a vote of non-confidence. Merrill Van Camp of Blackstock was re-elected president of the Durham- York P.C association at the meeting in Udora last week. and he said the executive has made no firm decision on when a nominating meeting will be held. "It would be immediately if we are forced into a pro- vincial election,"" he con- tinued, "But I think we will probably plan to hold one in October." The decision to trim the budget by that amount was made by council at its regular meeting, April 2, and RAS pvt is a further effort to lessen the impact this year on property owners in several areas of the Region. A committee of senior finance department person- nel, regional chairman, Walter Beath, and commit- tee chairman of the various departments met last week to try to ear-mark areas of the budgets where the cuts could be made. Although it is not known at this time what departments will have their spending slashed to meet the $1 million reduction, social services, police protection and public works are three areas mentioned as being a possibility. The request for the $1 million cut from the 1980 budget was made by the representatives from five Durham municipalities which are facing increases in their share of the Regional levy this year ranging from 14.8 per cent in Newcastle to 20 per cent in Ajax. The figures for Scugog and Uxbridge Townships are 16.3 per cent while property owners in Brock are looking at an 18 per cent hike in their (Turn to page 3) Driver suffers head injuries A 44-year old Mississauga man is lucky to be alive following a single car accident Sunday evening on Regional Road 57 near Blackstock. A spokesman for Durham Police said Raymond J. Courneyea was northbound about 5:20 p.m. when his car hit the right shoulder, went out of control, crossed the centre line, struck a hydro standard broad-side, flipped over and then landed on its roof in a swamp about 75 feet from the highway. The driver, who was alone at the time, sustained head injuries, and he is revnorted in stable condition in Oshawa General after undergoing surgery Sunday night. Police and Scugog Town- ship firefighters had to put the car back on its wheels before the driver could be freed. The impact of the crash resulted in extensive damage to the 1974 Olds hard-top. Part of the car's drive shaft was embedded in the mud about 50 feet from where the car finally came to rest. A spokesman for Durham Regional police said the next day that the accident is still under investigation. er Lae PY RC fg
