» by Mrs. Earl Reader We note that Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Wardlow of Pettet's Drive have returned from a month's vacation in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Murray Williams also had a very pleasant winter in Florida. It was a very beautiful Easter week end for a short vacation or visits. Accord- ingly, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Lang of Aldred's Beach entertained relatives from Barrie and Toronto prior to the departure of one family returning to Scotland. Mrs. Edith Davis returned to her former home area of Kedron for a renewal of friendships on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dowson spent the weekend with friends in Port Elgin. We wish to extend best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. John Darby and Joannie of Cedar Shores Beach as they have spent several years in the community, but have decid- ed to make their home in Cresswell with more land. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hor- top of Cedar Shores Beach spent the weekend with their daughter and her.family in Quebec. Mr. Maurice Fralick spent Easter in the Port Perry Hospital due to surgery during the early part of the week. We do wish a speedy recovery for him. CoAT ITA AS Mr. and Mrs. Clare Thompson entertained their daughter - Shirley and her husband from Richmond Hill and Shirley had the oppor- tunity of attending the Easter breakfast and service on the Island. This paper will reach some of you in time to remind you of one more euchre and bake sale by the Grace U.C.W. in the Community Hall on Tuesday, April 8. I hope you are aware that the museum on the Island is open early this year, prior to the Official opening in May. The Easter week end brought plenty of life to the Island Church. On Good Friday evening, Manchester joined with the Island congregation when approximately 70 people met upon this holy occasion to worship and join in fellow- ship. Then Easter morning approximately 80 people arose early enough to attend the breakfast with their neighbours and other members of the Church. Others arrived later for the service which was attended by a capacity crowd. The prelude of music by Mrs. John Beckett, George Free- man, and Bob Cawker was much enjoyed. The Pro- cessional of Jr. choir in their white gowns and carrying little crosses and Easter lilies and followed by the Sr. choir completing the number of 19 and all singing Allelvia was very touching and impressive. Through the service their two. anthems conducted by Mrs. Ethel Freeman were much appre- ciated. Rev. E. Linstead had a story for the children about a poor boy of India who had been trained to worship idols but thro' a childhood exper- ience could see that there was a great deal of differ- ence between idol worship and Christianity and there- fore made his choice which he followed to his death. The sermon for adults was the Easter Theme, "Why Seek Ye the Living among the Dead?" Of course, you are aware that the next Church events are a little more than two weeks away, April 25 and 26 when the Choirs present their Spring Concert on the Friday evening and you will remember from past exper- ience what a joy and pleasure this can be. The very next day the U.C.W.'S are busy with the hot, luncheon in the Church and the Art and Craft Show in the Island Hall. Each year this is somewhat different. the Hall you will find a display of many local paint- ings or sketches, crafts galore, a plant table, a flea At PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, April 9, 1980 -- 35 News and views from Scugog Island market corner, demonstra- tions, a table of home baking, tables where you can rest and chat over a cup of tea and snack. Some sales will be possible. So come prepared to purchase gifts for all occasions or personal use. You will get new ideas and be stirred to greater efforts. Bring the children too. This is our 7th annual showing. If you know of someone who has something interesting to show, please contact a member of the Head U.C.W. The Head U.C.W. met on Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Myrtle Manns with 21 ladies present. It's an opportune time for mystery sisters to sneak in a little surprise gifts. Of course, used stamps and Canada Packers labels continue to be turned in. The theme of Devotions was The Garden of Gethse- mane and the Easter Story was read by Elizabeth Stich- mann from Matthew 28. The study was conducted by the group in charge, Myrtle Manns, Helen Redman, Marie Clark in which- our attention was drawn to high- light of Easter for different people such as new Spring clothers, a vacation, Spring work as opposed to feelings of hope, peace, joy, security and Salvation. Donations of items for the flea market are acceptable. Many interesting crafts were donated for sale. Marion Hughes presented a simple game of skill. Helen Hortop was the only one proficient in perfection on her first try, but was less successful on her second try after watching many failures. It is interesting to note that 7 nominations were sent in to the Ratepayers and all were very good, for Citizen of the Year. Each community had a chance to send a name from their own area if they wished. Don't forget the public meeting for Island people in the Island Hall tonight, re- by-laws. The Easter lily at the front was placed by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mark of Port Perry in memory of the latter's sister Mrs. Edna McLaren who passed away in June, 1974. Her heart was in her Church and in her flowers which so frequently were seen in the Church. How she would have enjoyed sharing the develop- ment and progress of her Island Church.
