2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, April 23, 1980 Epsom school to remain unchanged for present The status of Epsom Public School will remain unchanged for another school year, at least. Trustees with the Durham Board of Education have ratified a recommendation from the Epsom School Accomodation committee to keep the school open for the school year starting this fall, and that the school not come under further study in November, 1981. Epsom this year has 93 students in Kindergarten to grade six with a staff of four teachers, and the yearly cost of operation for such things as custodian, fuel and hydro and maintenance is $19,340. The Accomodation Cartwright school (From page 1) secondary school in the Region with six class-rooms and just over 100 students. The enrolment at the school has never been higher than 117 students in grades nine to thirteen. Mrs. Christie said after the meeting last week, that the new committee will hold a second meeting May 1 at the school, and make a decision on just what aspects of the school's operation will come under close study. She said these will likely include such things as repairs, operating costs, projected enrolments over the next five years and the estimated cost of busing students. Once the committee has completed its study, it will pass recommendations on to the Durham Board of Education. It is not expected that the committee will have its recommendations ready for the Board until some time this fall. months. The report states that the parents committee believes "there is a strong feeling of support' for the school, and that it plays an important and significant role in the community. "The community of Epsom is centred around the school, and supports the activities of the school fully," says the report. The report also makes mention of the fact that an adjacent community, Bethesda, "died after the local school closed, and a concern has been expressed that the same fate might face Epsom under similar circumstances." School accomodation committees have been established by the Board of Education to study the operation of several rural schools in Durham Region, including Greenbank. The Board of Education wants schools examined when enrolments reach a certain figure, when the school is operating at less than 60 per cent of rated capacity, or when repairs and upgrading costs to meet education standards appear to be out of proportion to the value of the school. The enrolments at both Greenbank and Epsom Schools have reached the point where the study committee is formed, how- ever both schools are opera- ting at well above 60 per cent capacity. Last month, the Board accepted a similar recom- mendation about the future of the school in Greenbank. However, projected enrolments over the. next five years show a decline in the number of students at both schools, with Green- bank falling to 120 and Epsom to 75 students by 1984. The report from the Epsom Committee says, however, that there may be students attending other schools, whose parents would rather have them go to school in Epsom. The report suggests that changes in bus routes could help to increase the Epsom school popula- tion. Wonderland Dragon Four-year old Geordie Lishman doesn't seem at all concerned as he perches on the leg of this eight-foot metal dragon made by his dad Bill Lishman, who has a workshop near Blackstock. The dragon has been ordered by Wonder Land, a Disney-like creation now under construction north of Toronto, and due to open in May, 1981. The metal dragon weighs about 800 pounds.
