Sports with Danny Millar More than 200 softball registrations A Coaches badly needed to look after youngsters . by Danny Millar Softball registration rose to "roughly 200' according to Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association President Robert Cooper after the association's first weekend of the sign-up procedure for the coming season. In comparison to last year Mr. Cooper stated it was "about the same... actually it could be a little higher." Mr. Cooper realistically feels that about 150 more youngsters will show up, probably during the next couple of weeks when the practices are being held. "We expect a lot more yet," he stated. There is one problem area in the house league system. Originally the PPDMSA had planned to go with four Pee Wee boys teams but at the present time Mr. Cooper estimates that enough boys have registered to staff only two or three teams. He referred to registration in this age (11-13) as "a little slow." They need about another 60 boys, enough for at least two teams. "We're looking for some coaches," Mr. Cooper says. He anticipates that when the parents bring their young athletes down to the park for the first practices they will be invited to take over one of these chores. 'What we do is more or less ask the parents to donate their time", says Mr. Cooper. This apparently is one of three avenues open to prospective Casey Stengels of the sand lots. They can also get a hold of Mr. Cooper or Wayne Venn- ing or any other Executive member and ask for a team. If neither of those two options are plausible then they can talk to one of the league convenors. In a few areas the Association still needs convenors, an area normally occupied by an Executive member who has some experience. Both girls age brackets, the Pee Wees and Squirts, still need coaches. This was a major headache for the association last year when several of the Pee Wee house league coaches quit in the middle of the season. It has been said by various exec members that the girls at this age are difficult to handle. A couple of the house leagues have already been set. There will be a squirt league consisting of four teams and probably a full T-Ball alignment. "It's hard to say right now. It's a mixture of boys and girls" says Mr. Cooper on the T- Ball leagues. There is still an outside possibility that the house leagues will have a competi- tive team added to them. Due to a recent rate hike by the York-Durham league Port Perry may not be send- ing a full complement of teams into that travelling circuit. If teams are pulled, out of there, and don't find 3 ys and girls of the Scugog Soccer another league to compete in, then they will be placed in the next highest house league. squirt - all-stars, For instance, the should a A o Oy + REL Fhe 8. York-Durham attempts to place them else- where fail, will play in Port Perry against the older Pee Wee house league. The loop has scheduled a meeting for Sunday, May 4 and at least two members of the PPDMSA will attend. It was made clear at a local meet- ing last week that Port would probably find somewhere else to play unless the proposed fee structure was .changed.
