Sm or ONY 2 Aiwa 14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 7, 1980 First team in two years Local midgets will compete in Oshawa loop by Danny Millar For the first time in two years there will be a midget softball team in Port Perry this year. After a one year sabbatical when there was not enough boys to sign up 'Port Perry has returned to the game of rounders in this age bracket, coached by Kevin Walker. The team, sponsored by Malmont Farms, will compete with the Port Perry Mother's Pizza juveniles in the Oshawa City and District Men's League. This sets up an interesting rivalry between the home town clubs as they will meet each other four times during the regular season. The fireworks start with an exhibition game between the cross town rival son Thursday, May 9. In addition to the 24 league games that Port Perry will play against the Oshawa men the Midgets will be -- return to their own calibre of entered in four tournaments. "We're going to Sarnia for sure, we're going to North York, and if we can get in Belleville we'll go there," says Walker. They also will be playing in the all-Ontario championship tournament hosted by Port Perry this season. Walker claims that he had been invited to seven tour- neys but turned the others down because he felt that it would be too many. The Sarnia and North York meets were ones that the local juveniles went to last year. Walker is not concerned about playing against grown = A. ~~... li With this Ad 1 i i i i i i t i i i i i i i 1 i | i i i 1 i i 1 1 i i i i i be & Bring Me For A Professional 8x10 Colour Portrait WV2PRICGE GET ACQUAINTED WITH OUR NEW COLLECTION OF COLOUR BACKGROUNDS One sitting per subject-$1 per subject for additional subjects, groups, or individuals in the same family. A note of caution: the juveniles were less than a .500 team in the same circuit last term. "I think our biggest advan- tage this year is pitching," says Walker, himself a hurler with the juveniles in 1979. He is relying heavily on righthanders Mark Jeffrey and Phil Robinson. Jeffrey was on -the juvenile roster last year because of the absence of the midget squad, spending most of the year as an infielder before throwing late in the year when Walker injured his shoulder. Walker believes that Jeffrey, the harder thrower of the pair, will have no problem with the extra three feet that senior players require, saying that it will build up his arm. On the other hand Robin- son is basically an off speed pitcher. He was on the rubber last year when Walker's Bantam team won the York-Durham league championship over Union- ville. Because of the differ- ent styles Walker believes Robinson, who also played for a local men's team could BEAUTIFUL GENUINE DUPONT ACRYLIC made from your old denture RUSH SERVICE No Impression Needed!
