The forum was held to provide the community with the opportunity to learn about the problem of alcohol and drug abuse in Durham and to also allow the public to air their concerns and obtain answer their questions. Members of the District Health Council's Substance Abuse Committee with guest David Harlow, former Executive Director of Hostel Services Inc. participated as panel speakers at the forum. The Substance Abuse Committee, chaired by Tom Edwards, is in the process of developing a long range plan to aid in reducing the incidence of alcohol and drug abuse in Durham Region. Membership of the commit- tee comprises Geof Brown, Director of the Durham Addiction Research Founda- Greenbank News Church news this week: U.C.W. regional Rally at Plesant Point Church on Thursday. While the forum dealt with alcohol and drug abuse amongst adults, the major focus of attention was on the youth. The committee recognized that currently few resources exist in the Region to assist the youth with this type of problem and they are presenty attempt- ing to develop strategies to provide information and education and reduce the incidence of substance abuse. Mr. Brown indicated that the Addiction Research Foundation is currently involved in implementing a "peer counselling" program initiative within the secondary schools in Durham Region. He stated that the results of the program, which has been established in two of the schools, have proved to be very successful and hope to implement it within all the secondary schools in the near future. The peer counselling program is based 'on the concept of "youth helping youth" through good communica- tion, conern and empathy. As a result of The Substance Abuse Committee identify- ing the problem of alcohol and drug abuse amongst youth, the audience was informed about the estab- lishment of a Regional Youth Advisory Committee. The committee, compris- ing student representatives from various secondary schools in Durham Region was estabished to aid the Substance Abuse Committee with the problem of alcohol and drug abuse amongst the youth. It was noted that the members of the committee are currently sponsoring a Poster Competition, open to all secondary school stu- dents of Durham Region, the theme of which is to deliver an effective preven- tative and educative PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 7, 1980 -- 17 " Alcohol, drug abuse topic of public forum message on alcohol and drug abuse. Display areas and activities for the provision of information and education to students are being develop- ed, with the co-operation of their Principals, within the schools. Members are also in the process of nominating ongoing representation to the committee.
