All to be combined to form an incredibly large but graceful big top for the one day visit of the Martin and Downs Circus, Canada's touring tent circus. The local Chamber of Commerce in Port Perry are presenting the circus on Thursday, May 15 with 2 performances at 6:00 and 8:15 p.m. at Fairgrounds. Each morning in over 120 communities across Canada the circus erects the big top feeds the circus animals, and personnel, and prepares for performances, rain or shine. Martin and Downs Circus presents a traditional circus performance: 90 minutes of thrills and chills under the big top. You will see prancing liberty horses,' trained llama, aerial trapeze and Spanish web stars, educated mule and clever canines, wizards of balanc- ing and juggling, circus funny men in bombasts of buffoonery, and of course the Circus Elephant. The choir has represented Canada at the Lions Inter- nation Convention in Miami and has performed at the Ontario Place Forum. They have appeared on local, national and European television networks, have three records to their credit, and performed recently at a Wintario program held in Whitby. 7 Mr. Baird apparently began conducting at the age of twelve with the St. George the Martyr Boys' Choir which won two first place awards at the Toronto Kiwanis Festival and toured eastern Ontario. He also became organist and choir director at St. Clement, Riverdale in Toronto at age 18. His teaching career began at Port Perry High School at the age of 22 where he introduced the vocal program which at that time was the only such program in Durham High schools. In 1976 he was music direc- tor and orchestra conductor for the Oshawa Little Theatre's production of The Sound of Music, and also was composer for the 1977 production of that theatre's Man for All Seasons. He received his first degree from McMaster University in Music Educa- tion and his second degree in composition at York Univer- sity. The Choir is having its 13th annual spring show on May 12th and 13th at Anderson Collegiate. The show begins at 8 pm. and is entitled "Happiness Is'. A varied program of popular songs and medleys will be perfor- med including such favour- ites as Streets of London, Amazing Grace, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Fiddler on the Roof and Oklahoma to name only a few.
