CHRIS ALLEN ALUMINUM 985-3747 - The Durham officers have Durham Region Police officially assumed law enforcement responsibilities in Brock Township on June 1, the final phase of a Region- wide takeover which began when Durham was formed six years ago. With workmen still putting the final touches inside and outside, 43 officers took occupancy Saturday of a brand new two-storey build- ing in Sunderland. This will serve as headquarters for 26 Division which takes in the three Townships of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock. Under the command of Staff-Sgt. John Kay, the manpower compliment of 26 Division will include three sergeants, 36 constables, a youth service detective, a safety officer, a criminal investigation detective and a civilian office worker. Up until now, the 26 Divi- sion main office had been located in downtown Uxbridge. It will remain as a '"'storefront office" similar to the one operated in Port Perry. Staff-Sgt. Kay says that . officers working in Uxbridge and Scugog will not necess- arily have to report to the Sunderland office at the beginning and end of each shift, but rather can report to the storefront office' in the respective communities. When Division can call on special- ized police services such as a detective squad for serious crimes against persons, and an identification unit now stationed at Regional H.Q. in . Oshawa or the district H.Q. in Pickering. necessary, 26 -- garage for the cruisers, and individual offices for the senior staff. As with all areas of the Region, emergency police calls by the public go direct- ly to the force's communi- cations "nerve centre' at the H.Q. building in Oshawa. The information is then dis- patched immediately from H.Q. to the officers on patrol. Although Durham Region became a political entity in 1974, the expansion of the police force into all areas of the Region has been done in stages. The takeover in Brock Township and the opening of the H.Q. building to serve the three northern Townships completes the expansion. And over the past six years, the size of the force has grown as more area P.C. Tom Hart and Staff-Sgt. John Kay in front of the new 26 Division H.Q. came under its jurisdiction. When the Region was first formed, there were about 230 officers with the police force. Today, that figure stands at 380 officers of all ranks, along with 61 permanent civilian employees. Staff-Sgt. Kay told the Star Monday morning that the 'new Sunderland building should be completely finish- ed by the end of this week. building in Sunderland which opened on Saturday to coincide with the takeover of police duties in Brock Township by the Durham Regional force. Now that the takeover in Brock Township has been completed 26 Division offic- ers will be responsible for a far-flung territory of some 500 square miles stretching from Lake Simcoe in the north to the southern borders of Scugog and Uxbridge Townships. About - 33,000 people live in this area. As in other parts of Durham, the OPP retains responsibility for patrolling the provincial highways. responsibility for the towns and hamlets, and the count- less miles of Concessiom™ roads-in the rural areas of the three townships. The new 26 Division H.Q. building in Sunderland is | located in the geographic centre of the three Town- ships, and the 2.5 acre site was selected for this reason. The building is situated at the intersection of Albert Street and Highway 12, "highly visible" and provid- ing for easy access to the general public.
