Backpackers take note For millions of vacation campers, backpackers and outdoor adventurers, tents provide protection from the elements and pesky mosqui- toes. And for millions of yourigsters, a backyard tent can provide a hideaway, a clubhouse, or an overnight "adventure. The Ontario Safety League suggests that parents of youngsters who have tents or anticipate buying a tent instruct their offspring in the safe use and proper main- tenance of tents. Tents are not water-proof or mosquito-proof. They are only mosquito- and water- repellent. A good tent will don't touch the inside of the fabric when it's wet. And a good tent will keep mosqui- toes out if you keep the netting in good repair and tightly secured. Likewise, tents are not fire-proof. Many are not even fire-retardant. Tent fires have caused serious injuries, some of them fatal. Factors contributing to tent fires include careless use of smoking materials, windblown campfire sparks from campfires built too close to the tent, flame portable heaters, c oy stoves, or lanterns, and spilled grease, gasoline, especially . > kerosene, or other flam- "keep moisture out if you mable materials on the tent. \
