'58 Edsel Citation brought back to life oh rg a ig -o vd - 0 SN N From a lemon to a rea It burst onto the car market in 1958 with fanfare and publicity. Three years late, the Ford Edsel was dead. Scorned by the car-buying public and labelled by many as one of the greatest automobile "lemons" of all times, the Edsel in its brief three year history proved to be am embarassment and _2-finan- cial burden for the Ford Motor Company. Today, 20 years later, the Edsel has become a collect- or's item. In the United States, there is an Edsel owners association whose members take pride in restoring and driving their '"'lemons" with the un- mistakeable and unique oval-shaped front grill. Norm Mairs of Nestleton has recently completed a restoration project on a 1958 Edsel Citation, the luxury model of that year. Norm bought the car last year and spent the winter cleaning, tinkering, putting #2 The oval-shaped front grill was perhaps the most unmistake- able feature of the ill-fated Edsel which went out like a dud in 1960 after just three years of production. The new cream and gold paint matches as nearly as possible the original colours of this Edsel. in new seats, all new chrome and finally a new cream and gold paint job to match as near as possible the original paint that was on the car when it rolled off the line in '58. 'I'ne result is a beautiful four-door sedan with all the options which Norm says he plans to drive this summer and put on display at farm fairs and exhibitions. This is the first car that Norm has restored. When asked why he picked an Edsel he says 'it is an odd-ball car. There are very few of them on the road these days. "T guess I just wanted something a little different." The Citation was the top of the line Edsel, a luxury car that Ford hoped would compete with the Cadillac and Oldsmobile.
