Mrs. Short- ridge welcomed all present and the meeting was opened with the Ode and Mary Stewart Collect. The minutes were read and approved. Plans were made for a booth at the Archer Sale to be held on June 7th. It was decided to have a booth at the local Fair and display articles. Mrs. Hoskin and Mrs. Martyn were the committee named to look after this display. McLaughlin. The theme of the meeting was Current Affairs. The Roll Call - Give an Example of How you Stretch the Dollar," was answered by all present. This was followed by highlights of the meetings. One of the speakers was the Honourable Mrs. Pauline McGibbon, our Lieutenant- Governor who spoke on being a volunteer and emphasized. that we should be proud to be volunteers whe there is so much to be done. The District Annual report was given by Mrs. S. VanCamp. Among the things she told us were - that the Fun Fair was to be held October 23rd at Kendal, Ethel Chapman's name was to be in the Hall of Fame at Milton, we are encouraged to hold workshops, there would be a 1981 F.W.1.0. calendar for $1.50 each and there are also Women's Institute Song Books being printed, the Agricultural Museum opened May 12th for the summer and there was a great need for First Aid courses. Mrs. J. Kristensen gave an interesting talk on her recent trip to Hamilton where her daughter Anne was presen- ted with the Duke of Edin- burgh Gold -Award by - His Royal Highness, Prince Philip. Mrs. Kristensen showed us the award and also the invitation they received. Congratulations Anne! Mrs. H. Martyn had a poster on which was infor- mation regarding "Care and Labelling of Textiles". She explained the symbols on the chart, their colours and meanings. She also had a recent Consumers Magazine with interesting information. She told us about the consti- tuents of Laundry Deter- gents and why some are better also, that the density of the different soaps varies which makes a difference in hard water. A chart, which she made, was of great interest. It showed the reac- tion of the various detergents in hot, cold, hard and soft water, the price per load of washing and the Compahy that makes each detergent. One could determine from this information which ones gives the best performance and therefore help us in choosing a detergent. The meeting closed with "O Canada' after which lunch was served by Mrs. Martyn's group. ~ Potpourri Guild to break for summer by Zona Parkes On the evening of June 4th, Potpourri Handicraft Guild of Port Perry held its last meeting at Town Hall 1873 before summer break. The meeting was opened by President Mary Lou Carno- chan, the minutes of the previous meeting were read by Anna Spencley and the treasurer's report was given by Lynn Warne. The business portion included an important discussion on plans in progress for the Fall Festi- val, regarding arrange- ments to feature new personalities in the crafts field, especially with a view to offering a greater selec- tion of unique and interesting +hand crafted articles for sale. The regular annual Fall Show and Sale is scheduled to take place in Town Hall 1873 on Oct. 17th and 18th. After a short break for coffee and cookies supplied by the refreshment commit- tee, members were intro- duced to their guest Mrs. Ruby Johnson from Good- wood Ontario, who demonstrated the art of making bread dough flowers. She explained that by mixing white bread, white glue, glycerine and poster paints in the proper propor- tions it is possible to make delicate porcelain like flowers by pressing and shaping the dough with the fingers. The ladies were shown various examples of her bread-dough artistry; a striking table centre of large flowers, elegant jewellry pieces and a tiny basket filled with trilliums. On behalf of the Guild, Lynn Warne expressed her appreciation and presented to Mrs. Johnson a small gift. There were many beauti- ful articles displayed by Guild members; afghans, childs terrycloth jumpers, examples of Trapunto, Bunka and Needlepoint, a pine cone wreath, a Raggedy Ann doll, Applehead dolls - proof that everyone has been busy over the past months. The next regular meeting of the Potpourri Handicraft Guild will be held at Town Hall 1873 on September 3rd at 8 p.m. New members gre welcome. Ontario South women meet at Claremont by Mrs. Mervin Annis Ontario South District The 81st District Annual day long meeting of Ontario South Women's Institutes was held at Claremont United Church, Thursday May 22. TIWRZ » [/) Shoe aelly | ~~ ~7" 203 Queen Street - Port Perry Delegates were present from the 12 branches of the District namely: Altona, Ajax, Brougham, Brooklin, Claremont, Greenbank, Kinsale, Greenwood, Honey- dale, Port Perry, Myrtle, Shirley, Scugog Island, and Whitby. Guests were present from Ontario North, York East, York West, York Centre and York North districts. Annual reports were excel- lent with 100 per cent report- ing. Many worthy education- al projects were carried out during the year. The Claremont Branch held a very fitting memorial service for the departed members. Beautiful solos were rendered by Mrs. Elmer Wilson from Ashburn, 'Steal Away' and "I Would Be True". Honeydale Branch will be hostesses for the 1981 District Annual to be held in Port Perry. Retiring President Mrs. Wotten extended a thank you to all branches for support during her term of office and wished the newly installed" President Mrs. A.J. Brady of Whitby success in the work.
