& by Mrs. Earl Reader This last week Linda Parry attended the funeral of her grandmother, near Welland. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Samells also attended the funeral of the latter's uncle near Gull Lake. Our sympathy is extended to both these ladies and their families. Last week = Redman and fam ter- tained visiting relatives from Clearwater in Florida, where they apparently are presently experiencing very warm weather. The last week of May Mrs. Bill Middleton was left with some very happy memories during her last two days of retirement from employ- ment with Vachon Inc. On Thursday the staff and fellow workers invited her out to a surprise luncheon and presented her with a wrist watch. Then on Friday she was treated to dinner by the Company and given a presentation in appreciation of her faithful service. On Wednesday evening the Head U.C.W. met at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Stichmann with 19 ladies The opening thought was a suggestion to take God with you on vacation, followed by the Hymn Take Time to be Holy. Anne Alstein led in prayer and Irene Carter read the scripture of the Good Samaritan who took time from his busy day and responsiblities to help some- one in need. From the study book Please give a Devotion, Beryl Pearce and Bonnie Gerrow had found a very | appropriate topic - A vaca- tion with God and a vacation® without God, and thereby revived some serious consi- derations. The roll call was quite unusual but very interesting. Tell something about the member whose name was on the membership after your own and of course present. This gave us an opportunity to publicly express apprecia- tion for talents, personali- ties, friendship, community efforts, and neighbourliness. Appreciation cards were received from Mr. and Mrs. Ed Storie and Mrs. Lucille Gray. * The last meeting for the summer will be held on June 21 when we hope to have all members present, as it may be a special one - More details given later re loca- tion, etc. Elizabeth had a good reading - To see, to feel, and touch. Beryl had prepared a jumbled letter contest to make many words describ- ing items that the members take to suppers or sales. There were several winners but Jan Gerrow was the final lucky one chosen by lot. On Saturday, Rev. Clarke conducted a pretty wedding at the Island Church for Miss Silverthorn of Bowmanville and Mr. Fred Hodson Jr. This last weekend the head U.C.W. ladies were busy in Port Perry giving their support to the Histori- cal Society by way of break- fast and refreshments for Canoe the Nonquon. This year the service was given in the Latcham Centre which was much handier for work and service. A few of the ladies were present on Friday evening at Registra- Scugog Island tion and again at 5 a.m. Saturday. The next Women's Insti- tute meeting will be at the Community Hall on the eve- ning of June 18. The guest speakers will be Ethel and Geo. Freeman who will describe the proceedings of honey production from personal experience. Tickets are now ready for the Salad and possible Strawberry Supper and the Community Hall on Wednes- day, July 2. Call any member of the Head U.C.W. The Island children are still keeping up their atten- dance at Sunday Service in spite of other attractions. Next Sunday will be Promo- tion Day as well as Father's Day. Therefore we trust all the children will try to be -present and hope they will be supported by the accompani- mefit of fathers as well as mothers. Rev. Clarke and Rev. Lin- stead always have meaning- ful stories for the children. It is possible there may be a meeting after church on Sunday to discuss summer music, review finances and present needs, as well as other decisions. Keep July 6 in mind for the Dedication Service. The Remembrance Book will also be brought up to date with names of those who have given special dona- tions toward Church furnish- ings or in memory of loved ones. Congratulations to Scugog Island's early twins, Mrs. Rowland and Mrs. St. John who recently celebrated their birthday. Though residing in Port Perry for many years, they have never lost interest in their Island home, when they have sent donations for various pro- jects and visited upon many occasions. Belated congratulations to one of our Island boys of the PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 11, 1980 -- 33 and area news Head, Ron Hope, son of Helen and Roger Hope, when he received his Bachelor of Math degree from the University of Waterloo. He and his sister Louise have done very well in the field of learning. We are always interested in the progress of our young people as well as their parents who were all born on the Island. The U.C.W. is still collect- ing used stamps for the Leprosy Mission. Sang THICKSON RD. AND HWY. 2 SATURDAY, JUNE 14th At 10:00 a.m. o | WHITBY George "Woody" his new LIGHTHOUSE. over 22 years. GEO.
