ged! Le SOURS 34 7VATRLEW letters Thanks Honest Kids Dear Sir: Can you help me to locate three (I think) young people who were not thanked suff- iciently when they came to my resuce on Saturday, June va from Ottawa, just spent a week in the Oshawa General Hospital and came to my sister's home in Port Perry to recuperate. Almost as soon as I arrived in Port Perry I was eager to get out and stretch my legs so off I went to the centre of Town, browsing in several shops. By then I was tiring and decided to return home. My sister was out for the day and so I began my slow walk home. } At one point I stopped to rest and readjust my hold on my parcels and, unknowling- - ly, 1 walked away leaving my purse on the sidewalk. My pace was slow;-1 was exhausted and worrying about making it home. '"'Lady! Lady! Lady!" Turning slowly and unwill- "ingly to the source of the commotion a few yards away, three young people, early or pre-teen, were point- ing to the sidewalk. "Did you drop your purse?" They brought it to me, I thanked them feebly and they were off. Those marvellous kids deserve more than they got. At the time, I wasn't up to anymore but I would like to make it up to them now. Our days, our lives, are filled with negative experi- ences, bad news. [I've always thought that when something good happens we should shout it from the rooftops, let others share the experience. Who knows, maybe positive experiences that are given some exposure will generate more positive happenings. And so I want everyone to know about these tremen- dous kids, their generosity, their honesty. I want to locate them and to meet them. I want to write to the Town Council and to their schools in recommendation of their exemplary behavious. Can you help me find them? Please call 985- 8279. Yours truly, Roma Colbert Ottawa, Ontario Dues Check-offs Dear Sir: The current Progressive Conservative legislation to make the check-off of union dues compulsory for all workers -in_a unionized - business defies all logic and common sense. It is another example of legislation that tramples on the rights and independence of individuals. That large unions have forced this check-off system on many existing companies does not alter the fact that compulsory dues check-offs effectively eliminate any control that an individual worker might have over the union and its activities. Without the compulsory dues check-off, a simple withhold- ing of union dues gets the message of approval or dis- satisfaction to the union leaders. No words or letters are necessary. There is no shortage of union power today. Unions can shut down entire indust- ries by preventing willing workers from continuing operations. There is no regard or legal obligation to those willing workers or to injured third parties. If there is to be any new labour legislation it should increase union accountabil- ity and responsibility by making compulsory dues check-offs illegal and by ensuring that individuals have the right to work regardless of union affilia- tion. Only then will individ- ual workers have some over their work efforts and ambitions. Pay and respons- ibility should be based on competence and productiv- ity, not on union membership or potential votes in the next election. Yours very truly, R. Marttila President, Peterborough Libertarian Constituency Association Society (From page's) to, tire wife of Haman. My father, W.H. Harris, sang a tenor part. ) The old Town Hall was packed night after night. I particularly enjoyed the excerpts from the Pirates of Penzance and the pianist who played "Beautiful Ohio."" She had to go back a long way for that one. I think it came out just after the First World War. Yours truly, John E. Harris Scarborough, Ontario Excellent Article Dear Sir: I always enjoy the Port Perry Star and June 4 Chatterbox re: Capital Punishment was so excellent I wanted to say so, perhaps on behalf of those who simply don't have the time. Terrible ~ things are happening and when it involves children it is despic- able and time to soul-search at the very least. Personally, I will never believe that Capital Punish- ment is the answer. We must " get back to basics, not neces- sarily the hell and brimstone type religion but a sense of communications with our- selves that will help us to help others, sicker or weaker perhaps in mind, body and or soul. One can't hang a person and find peace. But we must find a way to inspire society. God help us all! Marion Ford, 690 Cosburn Avenue Toronto 13, Ontario Board rejects Ho (From page 1) be effective or efficient", and that patients care could suffer because physicians "would not travel to other institutions to make rounds, nor would the physician refer patients to another general practitioner." The Board's response also flatly rejects the portion of the consultants report which suggests either phasing out completely the obstetrical unit of Pert Perry and Uxbridge Hospitals, or having one of the hospitals handle the obstetrical patients from both communi- ties. BLACK & DECKER WORKMATE The Board says that aside from the inconvenience to patients and physicians, and the reduced level of emer- gency obstetrical care, removing the full obstetrical care facilities from the hospital would be costly. The Board's paper goes on to. say that such a move would fragment the family care practise of local physi- cians. "We (the Board) feel very strongly that we should continue to provide obstetri- cal services to this com- munity, and in no way should this service be provided in The versatile work bench that makes any job easy. The consultants report to the Durham District Health council was prepared by the firm of Peat, Marwick and Partners "for discussion purposes only." The response papers from the various boards will be turned over to the consul- tants for inclusion in the final draft of the hospital role and PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 11, 1980 -- 7 spital report alternatives study which is expected to be completed by the time the Health council holds it annual meeting on June 25.
