Game-saving throw gives Juveniles win by Danny Millar Port Perry Mother's Pizza Juveniles eked out a 6-5 win over RH Cabinet Juveniles on Wednesday, June 11 at the Joe Fowler Memorial Park. They needed a game saving throw from Dennis Franssen to win it. It was one of those classic situations. The home side ahead by a run in the bottom of the ninth, one out, bases loaded. 'A long fly ball was hit to left-centerfield, the area guarded by the left- handed Franssen. Franssen made the catch and the runner at third base, Darrell Jerome, tagged simultan- eously. Franssen threw a perfect strike to catcher Carl Durward and Jerome was dead on arrival. Righthander Tim Thomp- son got the win. And Fran- ssen should have got the credit for the save. It was one of the most interesting games that Port' Perry has played at home this season. They fell behind 3-0, but surged ahead with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cabinet tied it up with a pair in the seventh before Port won with a run in the home half of the seventh.' Port Perry committed nine errors in the game, which accounted for at least two of the runs. Cabinet got its second run when third baseman Steve Redman, usually an outfielder, took a grounder and threw the ball past first - sacker Bob Ireland. Near Miss Mark Braun hit a wrong field single to left to start the fourth inning rally for Port Perry. He was followed by Franssen, who beat out a bunt. Braun scored the first run when Redman lined a base hit into center field. Ian Hartung came up and bunted Cartwright Little league underway by Robert Hermann The Cartwright Softball league had the season opener Tuesday June 10th with the Junior Division (7 to 10 yrs.) heading up our baseball season. Despite the unseasonally cold, windy v weather it didn't hamper the enthusiasm of these little leaguers. ~ The opener between Marj Tripp Real Estate and David Hairstyling was a hard hit- ting game with Davids being trounced 23 to 10 in Black- stock. At Nestleton Don Frew and Sons Ltd. squeaked by Davies Auto Body 14 to 11 with the winning runs for Frew coming in the bottom of the seventh. In another hard hitting game Turner's Green Giants fell victim to Thompson's Village Market by walloping the Giants with a 22 to 10 victory. A great start to our ball schedule with weekly games all summer and plenty of time to tighten up. Upcoming is our season opener for the Senior Divi- sion (11-14 yrs.) on Wednes- day, June 18th when six of seven teams meet head on for their first of the summer season. 202020 CIC CACC CIC 2200 IC JIC 3252525¢5252525: CACC [oho Tale | plop inion] aC io [alo [alo [hn [ alo | Tek Ten Tels] win] 3 66 Brock St. W., Uxbridge 852-5291 Lage Lap a on Lape ap age ogn on | ogn Lopn Lo Leymann | ope gn [gn {cg | on | cy cy JCC C we | le le | eh veh D. With none out Healey drove in a controversial run when he hit a grounder te shortstop Rob Garrow, who tried to tag Redman running to third but 'apparently missed. Frans- sen came in from third on the play. The call of the base umpire drew the ire of the Cabinet infielders and coaches. They appealed to home plate but were rather loudly rebuffed. Redman came in with the third run of the segment when Fedyk grounded to second baseman Donnie Taylor, forcing Healey out. Hartung touched the plate with run number four when Ireland hit a high chop over third base. Ireland eventual- ly came around with the last run of the inning when first baseman Paul Fogel dropp- ed a routine throw for what should have been the third out. Thompson and Jerome matched each other evenly throughout. They each end- ed up with four strikeouts. Thompson allowed six hits, two less than the chunky Cabinet righthahder. Braun scored the winning run after the seventh inning stretch after reaching base, advancing to third on Frans- sen's safety and coming home on Ray Gibson's fly ball to left field. Just before that, Cabinet had tightened things up by scoring twice. Garrow, known locally as the MoJacks rookie of the year, drove in the first run with a double that hugged the left field line. The second tally scored when shortstep Gibson made an error. The Port Perry Juveniles swing into action next Thurs- day, June 19 against Albuk. They have already bowed 5-2 to the Oshawa team this ear. [5] E0000 AMA A AAA AAMAS AIR ANNAN VAY 'HEY KIDS!' At Ontario finals Patton 4th in high jump __by Danny Millar Two Port Perry athletes competed in the Ontario Federation of Secondary school Athletics Association track meet in Toronto two weeks ago. Senior High Jumper Mike Patton finished fourth with a jump of 1.98 meters.. The conditions for the meet were less than ideal. Patton jumped at 6:00 p.m. in the pouring rain. He adapted to the weather better than 24 other competitors in the very large field. Last year, Patton finished 12 out of 24 at the all-Ontario meet. He capped an excel- lent 1980 season with his fourth place finish. He was the record setting winner at LOSSA, second at COSSA and third in the regional championships. Brett Oosterman was the other competitor to advance to the provincials. He did not make the cut in his junior triple jump event. Only the top eight finishers jump in the final round. Port Perry Rebel coach Jerry Cole declined to assess the team's performance, saying only that "'It's a great honour to go to OFSSA." Patton may not be coming back to Port Perry next year.
