Cn Rr 4 on || Doors - Windows - Siding oat GR Tai ls ERS Durham Region is about to train an investigator to track down people who are defrau- ding the welfare depart- ment. He or she will work on a one-year trial basis checking into the distribution of the region's $10-million welfare budget. Oshawa councillor John DeHart who has pushed to hire the investigator since last fall said the move will save the region money. How much, he doesn't know, he said, since the region hasn't tried anything like this before. Nor would he give any approximate estimate of how many of the 5,000 people who receive wel- fare assistance every month take advantage of the system. Social services commis- sioner Doug Johns said his department was suspicious of 30 or 40 cases last year. But because of the difficulty in proving intend to defraud in 'a fraud case, only six cases were prosecuted in the courts, Johns pointed out. The salary for the position, he said, will cost the region about $20,000 for the one- year period. At the end of this time, he said, the region will review results of the investigator's work and decide whether to continue the program. In many cases, DeHart . Investigator to track down Durham welfare defravders said, welfare assistance will be simply cut off when the department determines the recipient doesn't warrant the benefits. If evidence exists that a fraud was committed the department would ask the police to lay charges. The basic assistance a single man recieves is $43.70 a week. The amount in- creases if a recipient has a wife and children, Johns said. Surprise party for Cecil Heayn's 80th On June 11, a surprise party was held at the family home to celebrate Cecil Heayn's 80th birthday. Pine Ridge Garden Club June meeting by Norma Frew ' The Pine Ridge Garden Club held their June Meeting in the form of a bus trip to Otto Richter & Sons "Herb Gardens' at Goodwood. The Richter family are most enthusiastic about the use of herbs in cooking and medical treatment. The early Indians who pre- ceded us on this continent utilized the healing plants of the forests, deserts and sea- shores. Although our pre- scription drugs are available in handy, colourful, even tasty forms and all appear to be "factory made' or of synthetic chemical origin over 37 percent of all pre- scriptions contain a drug from natural plant sources. When the early settlers arrived in North America, many carried with them herbal remedies. More cau- tious settlers began to ask the native inhabitants of America - the Indians to show them which plants were useful for curing sickness. The Richter greenhouses hold plants of every descrip- tion along the herb line and are recognized in many countries. Needless to say the bus on the way home was loaded down with plants of many varieties. The July meeting will be a barbecue and film presentation. DIRECTORY V&L . Watch for announcements regard- ing Rally Day at that time. As we looked at the loyal members of our choir on Sunday we realized we wouldn't have one of them if we were residents of Cam- bodia where Communists have killed all above a grade three level and all who wear glasses as they are consider- ed to have education. As was fitting on Father's Day the collection stewards, Glen Wilson and Dorothy Freeman represented family as a father and mother. - Rev.
