ah The Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club played host fo a 16-team tournament on Saturday for the Mixed LYS LAS HUY Td iy ' Aa, A *, AEE FRE FREE) CER CEE AA Tt aed PA a EA... Murray Trophy. The overall winners were Bill and Gladys Joyce from Oshawa. Runners-up were Joe and ~ Aa : : i Helen Brown, Whitby ; Harry and Edna Deshane, Port TH Perry; Bill and Melba Owen, Port Perry and Harold and Ann Garrgtt, Whitby. Devils register 6-0 shutout by Batty Page '® Last Thursday our Port Perry Printing Devils played a near perfect game. The offence out-scored the Whitby team by six goals and the defence shut them out giving our Devils a 6-0 - ® win. This was another com- plete team effort. With good ball control from centre Daryl Musselman, left wing Paul Bateman, and left half Mark Butters, they seemed to own the ball on their attacks. Our defensive crew ® of Colin Stone, Jim Lamb, Tony Kersten, Bob Lamb, Alard Flin and Mike Bruton were outstanding with their persistent checking and sup- porting play. Mike Connolly has to credit himself with a @ shutout as he played a ~~ - en = - mr TESTE YRS superb game in goal. He not only controlled the goal area but he cleared the ball with confidence to set up our offence so they could strike back: I or There were a few trying moments such as scrambles in the goal area with rebounds from the crossbar but Mike smothered the likes of these and controlled the rest with ease and confi- dence. Gord Brown played another strong game in his right wing position. He not only controlled his wing but set up players around him. After hitting the post and crossbarr he found his range and scored three goals. Paul Walton who played right half seemed to play with more confidence and scored his first goal. Rob Page who plays centre half is our link between defence and _offence.. He controlled- the - centre zone with authority and set up a number of situations for our forwards. Rob assisted on two goals along with scoring two of his own. He also had a number of opportunities from the forward line. : So another fine game from our Devils who are improv- ing with every outing. Our soccer school instructor used the expression that play was "magic" well this game was full of "magic". Our next game will be August 7, 6:30 p.m. at the St. John Field in Whitby. LL RITE 0 VLA CIR PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., August 6, 1980 -- 13 Lake Scugog to be site of weekend Bass championship by Dhnny Millar There are two fishing derbies scheduled for Lake Scugog in the confing months the first, a Muskie Derby for Western Weekend, and another, the International Bass Championship, for the third weekend in September. The International Bass Championship is slated for Sept. 19-20 and Port. Perry Marina owner Bill Kendry is 'expecting as many as 250 teams for it. The International tourney has an interesting concept. The team that has the high- est total weight poundage of fish accumulated over the two days is the winner. However, each team gets an added bonus for the number of live fish they release back into the lake at the end of the day. '"Whoever has the highest weight in pounds 'naturally is the winner." The fish will be weighed on government inspected scales. The headquarters for the two day event is Goreski's Marina. Phil Goreski, who owns that Marina, and Mr. _ Kendry have entered into an agreement with Dick Wylie of Blenhem, Ontario. Wylie represents one of the major sponsors of the event. Messrs. Goreski and Kendry formulated the plans for the major derby, just like they did for the Muskie hunt during Western Weekend. . Mr. Kendry recalled how the idea came up. "Well, Thursday, August 7th - 9 p.m. - 1 am. M.G. DISCO NEW ARENA - PORT PERRY (19 Years and Over - 1.D. Required) 10TH ANNUAL WESTERN WEEKEND Sponsored by Scugog Chamber of Commerce. MINI TRACTOR PULL SUNDAY, AUGUST 10th - 1:00 P.M. PORT PERRY FAIRGROUNDS CLASSES: Stock & Single Cylinder and Modified Mini Tractor ADMISSION: Adults $3.00 - Children $1.50 Sponsored by Port Perry Junior Farmers. Goreski and I got talking and got involved with Dick Wylie" he notes. "We said 'hey, we should have a tour- nament here." According to Mr. Kendry, prize money from sponsors has been soaring in. "I know of at least $10,000." Four trophies have been donated by local merchants. 'So far we've had a very good response," he said in refer- ence to the sponsors. The entry forms are being printed now and should be out by next week some time, states Mr. Kendry. Like the Muskie derby, three- quarters of the entry fee is channelled for prize money. The other quarter goes for administration cost. How does it feel to be out on the street? Find out. Take a walk. 9 . Walk a block. Today. ~ THANKYOU The Port Perry Ball Hockey League would like to extend a very special Thank You to Bill Barr and Sons of Stedmans of Port Perry and Uxbridge for spon- soring our Ball Hockey Tournament. iA ¥ ar CA %
