Greg Fedyk, who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored when Schomberg rightfielder Mark Matson dropped. a fly ball hit by George Burnett. Dickson scored when Dave Canning poked a base hit to centerfield and Canning came. in on a hit by Mark Cleveland. Cleveland has joined the team for the playoffs, as had outfielder Dennis Franssen. Both played regularly last year. Franssen saw action 1n a game early in the season and he ended up making a key throw to save the win. Cleveland is an infielder who can play second base and shortstop. He appeared at second against Schomberg, replacing Ray Gibson. Cleveland and Franssen take over roster vacancies left by second baseman Mark Brawn and outfielder Steve Redman, both of whom are too old for juvenile play but are with the team during its Oshawa City and District Men's League games. Port Perry got good pitch- ing from starter Ian Hartung and Tim Thompson, both righthanders.: Thompson went the distance to get the first win in Schomberg and he came from the bullpen to work Hartung out of a sixth inning jam after he gave up a On September week-end PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., August 20, 1980 -- 13 Juveniles take first OASA series easily pair of runs. The duo com- bined to limit Schomberg to 12 hits and they struck out six. Carl Durward had a big hit in the seventh when he sing- led home Canning and Dick- son. Franssen preceeded them in the same inning by scoring on an infield error. But the biggest blow of the night belonged to Canning, who hit a first inning bouncer over: third base with two runners on base. Canning also went in on the play after the ball skipped past the left fielder. Canning took advantage of some strategy that backfired on Schomberg. After Sween- ey loaded the bases by walk- ing Burnett, the visitors drew their infielders in tight, hoping to cut down a run at the plate. Second sacker Randy Jenning was playing almost on a line with the back of the mound and short- stop Scott Baker was just as close on the other side. Because he was playing so close, Baker had no chance on Canning's drive down the line. Had he been playing in the hole between second and third, he might have been able to stop two of the runs. The Juveniles became the second Port Perry team to advance past the first OASA round. Earlier the midgets squeeked past Uxbridge in three games. Bass tourney at Lake Scugog by Danny Millar So far, says director Dick Wiley, of Blenheim, Ontario, prizes and money for the upcoming Canada - United States International Bass Tournament Championship have totalled an astounding $15,000, depending on the - number of: entrants for the September 20-21 tourney. According to Mr. Wiley, who is the owner of one of the sponsoring businesses, there are 15 national and inter- national sponsors and two major distributors, including Evinrude. That boating company is donating a 7% horsepower motor for first prize. There is also an undetermined amount of money going to the first place finisher. In addition, the winner of the largest fish award gets a Johnson motor, plus cash. Part of the cash will come from the $75 entry fee each team must pay for the tour- nament. Each team, which consists of two fishers, can catch 12 large or small mouth bass between them. Each fish must be at least 12 inches long and there is a penalty of one pound if this is not Midgets lose first game to Sydenham by Danny Millar Sydenham took an early one game lead in the best of three second round OASA midget play when they pounded Port Perry 11-6 at across ten runs.
