Ken Irvine comes up big in Port OASAwins by Danny Millar Ken Irvine has turned out to be the money pitcher of the Port Perry Canadian Tire Men's pitching staff. After a season of moderate success, Irvine has won four straight starts in post-season competition. Irvine's fourth win, by an 8-2 margin, wrapped up the, Goodwood Seniors Port: Perry OASA second round, on Thursday, August 21, in Goodwood. The night before Irvine was the pitcher of record in a 7-4 win. The key blow in the series ending win was registered by Phil Cochrane in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, Goodwood hurler Dave Jackson served up a fat pitch that the Port shortstop jumped on and pounded for a three run triple. The first game is in Elm- vale near Barrie, next Satur- day, August 30 and the foll- owing game is in Port Perry Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. Elmvale edged out Mine- sing by one run in the third and deciding game for the right to meet Port. Port Perry got another pair in the fourth, the last inning they faced Jackson. Charlie Durward singled and stole second before scoring on a base hit by Don Phinney. Phinney later scored on an error. Phinney drove in another He singled home Mike Healey, who had doubled and been sacrificed to third, with a hit into shallow right field that dropped in front of Gilroy. Kevin Walker came in to pitch the final four innings for Port, gaining the save. He nailed down the win by striking out one hitter and not allowing a run. Walker and Irvine scattered eight hits between them. Port imade two errors in the |game. Port batsmen had ten hits. Irvine was the winning pitcher in both of the Port Perry wins in the openin round against Claremont. He has given up only 11 runs -and the lefthanded power through the four games. Goodwood did not have as much fortune with their pitchers in the first game. They started junk ball right- hander Norm Roberts and he fooled several of the Port hitters in the early going. He was chased with one out in :the fifth while Port had a ,pair of runners in scoring 'position. . The new hurler, Gary Gil- roy, threw a fat pitch to Jay Williams on his first offering hitter pounded it for a run scoring double. On a follow- ing play Robert Evans raced in from third on a passed ball and Williams also came in from third, this time on a wild pitch. By the second inning the Port batsmen had figured out Roberts and the bottom of the order men knocked him around. Irvine opened with a safety and Don Phinn- ey doubled. Ken Jeffrey, the ninth man in the line-up, hit a seeing eye single that just made it through the infield and scored both runners. Jeffrey ended up on third and scored when Phil Cochr- ane hit a bouncer past short- stop Dwayne Pegg. The other Port Perry tally was recorded in the seventh. Redman led off and got on base and then Brent Fallis walked. A check swing infield out by Williams dis- tracted the Goodwood in- fielders long enough for Red- man to come around from second and score. Fallis nearly caused a fray during his first two times at, the plate. On both occasions he was so bewildered by Robert's slow pitching that on the third strike, which he was way ahead on, the bat flew out of his hands.
