Port Perry was eliminated in two straight games des- pite a stellar pitching perfor- mance by righthander Mark Jeffrey. He gave up the three runs on only five hits. But Sydenham thrower Dale Bowes was equal to the task as he scuttled Port on four hits. Brian Dickson got the big- gest hit off Bowes, a second inning inside the park home run to the right field fence, spotting Port to a 1-0 lead. Dave Davis got the other Port run in the fifth. He singled and eventually scored on an error by the normally sharp Sydenham infield. Third sacker Scott Walker, particularly, held a hot hand at the hot corner. Sydenham got three runs, one at a time, in the fifth, - sixth, and seventh innings. Dave Wilson started with a hit through left fielder Paul Van Camp's legs, sending himself to third. One bats- man later, he scored on a sacrifice fly. Sydenham got the tying marker in the sixth on a bases loaded passed ball by Davis. They got the winning run in the next frame on a sacrifice fly. Port had its last chance in the top of the ninth when they sent up the middle of the order hitters. But Sean Few- er, Todd Wilbur, and Dick- son couldn't start a rally. But the Port Perry athlete who came up with a big game was Jeffrey. He pitch- ed out of a jam in the first Juveniles inning after Van Camp dropped a fly ball by leadoff hitter Bowes and the batter ended up on third. He was stranded there. Jeffrey struck out the side in the second inning. The loss eliminates Port from any further serious play. They have one league game remaining in the Osha- wa City and District circuit but they are rejected from making the playoffs. drop two games to Minesing The Port Perry Mother's Pizza juveniles made a quick exit after losing the first two games of their second OASA series to Minesing on back to back nights, August 16-17. Port was edged 3-2 in Minesing in the first game. Tim Thompson picked up the loss but struck out six men in the process. Port Perry coach Bob Knapp said it was "By far the best game all year," for the righthander. He even used the adjective "fantastic'"" to describe Thompson's performance. Port earned both of their runs in the seventh inning. Dave Dickson reached on Port wins (From page 15) of the visitors bench. The second time the bat flew over the wall and hit a spectator. After the second time Good- wood players stormed off the playing field in the direction of the bleacher,-all the while screaming at the batter.- The situation had its hum- orous side, though. In his two subsequent appearances the Goodwood spectators left that section and crouched House League wrap-up by Laurie Cooper Saturday was another busy baseball day in Port Perry as the Squirt and PeeWee boys held their final playoffs. It was a day of good ball and great competition from -- all six Squirt teams and four PeeWee teams involved. I'm sure all the coaches felt quite proud of their boys on Saturday as we could see the enthusiam shown and the progress made over this season. In Fallis's last trip to the batters box one fan stood on the top row of seats and threatened to throw a small- er sized bat at the big first baseman. Goodwood got its runs in pairs during the fourth and eighth frames. Pegg started "the fourth with a leadoff base hit and went to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on another safety and scored when Robert 'Evans let a third strike get past him and threw too high for Fallis to bring it down. They added another marker with a sacri- fice fly. They got their runs in the eighth when Fallis made an error and Evans threw a runner out at second base, allowing one in from third. Port Perry now awaits the winner of the Elmdale- Minesing series. The next round for them will likely start on Labour Day Week- end and it has to be over by Sept. 13. If Port takes that round they advance to the Provincial final tournament _in Sarnia. Hole in one On Tuesday, Aug. 19 while golfing with the Summerlea Ladies Golf League, Judy Reader, a first year golfer, shot a hole in one of 150 yards on the second hole. The winner of low gross this week was Judy Reader and Carol Wilson with a score of 38 and low net was Judy Reader with a 14. The ninth hole was birdied by Marg Moore and Vivian Rider had a chip in on hole 7 as well as a birdie on hole 9. Four other ladies also had chip ins, Bonnie MacLeod on hole 1, Linda Parry hole 2, and Judy Kalynko and Carol Wilson on hole 3. second baseman D. Poole's error and Thompson, batting cleanup, tripled him home. Carl Durward followed with a two base hit that delivered Thompson. Minesing got a run in the fifth on three consecutive singles and. a fielder's choice. They got two in the bottom of the ninth to win the match. Minesing out hit Port 6-4 and each team made an error. In the second game Port made three miscues while Minesing had one. Minesing won the round with a 4-2 victory in Port Perry, August 17. the third and another pair in the eighth. Thompson allow- ed seven hits while Port batsmen managed only two. "A few days after the series had ended, Coach Knapp lauded his charges. 'I was really proud of the way the guys pulled together," he said. He also noted that if his team had gotten a '"'couple of breaks' they could have won the series. The juveniles became the second team in the Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association to be eliminated from OASA play- downs. The PeeWees were ousted in two games by Uxbridge. Earlier the juveniles took out Schom- berg in two easy contests. Hurricane girls beat Oshawa This week's game started at 6:30 on Thursday, August 21 at the Scugog Soccer fields and the Homestead Furni- ture Hurricanes girls soccer team beat Oshawa Rangers 3-1. They were a bit slow to get started but once they got going they showed very good form with Terri O'Neal scor- ing the first goal assisted by Joanne Skerrat. Then Joanne scored the second goal with an assist from Dana Forder. Then Dana put the third goal in the back of the net from a good shot from Andrea Carnegie who helped assist. Lots of action. Playing well on defence were Kim and Andrea. One breakaway when the Hurricanes were caught up field cost the one goal scored by Oshawa Rangers. Next game is at home 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 28 against the Osha- wa Soccer Club. wb
