PORT PERRY STAR Prince Albert boy plays lead role in Toronto production A young Prince Albert boy, fourteen year old Marc Tapper has spent most of the summer in Toronto, rehears- ing and starring in the production of The Little Prince. Marc plays the lead role in Skylight Theatre's production, portraying a little boy from a small planet who leaves his home. The following article,' written by Sylvia Levine of the Toronto Star appeared in that newspaper earlier this summer. Even though winning his first role as a professional actor has meant being separ- ated from his home, friends, and family, all summer, Marc Tapper, 14, of Prince Albert, Ontario, doesn't mind the sacrifices. Marc plays the lead role in Sky- light Theatre's production of The Little Prince, which opened Aug. 8 and runs to Aug. 31. The performances begin at 8:30 just after sunset at this time of year. "Playing the Little Prince is fun," Marc said. "Even though it means working at it 12 hours a day sometimes, and it's not easy, it's still - fun." Long hours of daily rehearsal started six weeks before the production opened. The new theatre company is trying something new for the Metro area in its presen- tation of The Little Prince. The play will be performed out-of-doors in North York's Earl Bales Park and admiss- jon will be free. (Costs of production are being cover- ed by grants from govern- ment and business.) Marc is finding that his new experience means learning a lot more than how to act. "I'm learning more about myself in trying to understand the character of the little prince," he explain- ed. "I had to find out what I myself have in common with him in order to play him. And I have a great deal in common with him, I have discovered. We see some things the same way; we request some things in the same way." The story, written in French in 1943 but well known in English, too, is about a little boy from a small planet who leaves his home and the rose that he loves in order to find a way to live in harmony with his ETO EEE TTT TTT = Unleaded Gas, Motor Oil? Marc said that even though he might be billed as the star of the show because he plays the little boy from outer space, 'Everyone's a star in this show. The other actors, the directors, the technical crew - every one of us is important to make this show happen," he said. Even though Marc is glad that he made the choice to come to Toronto to be in this play, he is very glad that a close friend is coming to see him in The Little Prince. "He's coming all the way from where we live just to see the play. That makes me feel good," Marc said. And once he's back home in Prince Albert, Marc won't forget his summer as a professional actor. "So much has happened," he said. "I don't know if I'll always be an actor, but I thing that the stage will always be among my top choices of things to do. And ° this has been quite an experience."
