2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., September 3, 1980 Malcolm officially announces Wants back into political life After a two year absence, Lawrence Malcolm wants to get back into active political life. The 61-year old former mayor of the Township officially announced last week that he will be seeking the Scugog seat on Durham Region council in the munici- pal election coming up on November 10, oo € LAWRENCE MALCOLM Mt. Malcolm, who is a long-time veteran of munici- pal politics in this area, told the Star in an interview last week that he feels he can "serve the needs of the people" both on the local Scugog council and at the Regional-level. He said the idea of seeking the Regional seat has been on his mind for several months, and that he has been urged by numerous people to seek election this fall. "I stated earlier this summer that I was thinking of running for office, but I wanted to wait until now before making any official announcement," he said. So far, Mr. Malcolm is the only candidate to declare intentions for the Regional seat, which will be up for grabs this November. Scugog's present Regional councillor Reg Rose will not be seeking re-election at the municipal level this year because of conflicts with his job as Anglican minister for the parishes in Port Perry and Blackstock. Scugog school trustee Yvonne Christie, a former chairman of the Durham Board of Education, has been rumoured as a possible candidate for the Regional seat this fall. Mrs. Christie has said she will not be seeking re- election to the school board. Although she has not ruled out the possibility of running for Regional council, she is yet to make a firm commit- ment. Mr. -Malcolm's career-in -- Ee ET TTT TTT We've Moved! He served three years and then was out of politics until 1968 when he was elected reeve of that Township. With the advent of Region- - al government in 1974, Mr. Malcolm was elected the first Mayor the amalgamat- ed Township. He was re- elected in 1976, and then lost the 1978 election to Jerry Taylor by 237 votes. He admitted last week that after the 1978 defeat, he had little interest in getting back into active political life. But he said his change of mind was prompted by a couple of things: the urging of friends and supporters and a lack of satisfaction with some of the policies of the present coun- cil, especially captial spend- ing. Drew, Wolters throw their hats into ring Two members of Scugog council have announced they will be seeking re-election when Township voters go to the polls on November 10. RICHARD DREW Ward 2 (Port Perry) coun- cillor Richard Drew indicat- ed recently he will be trying to retain his seat on council, and Ward 4 (Cartwright) councillor John Wolters said he will be going after his present seat. Mr. Drew was first elected to council in 1976, and in the 1978 elections had a rather easy time beat- ing his opponent Ivan Park- inson by a wide margin. So far, four members of the present Scugog council have made official announcements concerning their plans for the up-coming election. Mayor Jerry Taylor will be seeking re-election, and present Ward: 1 councillor Don Crosier has announced he will be seeking election to the area councillor position. Birdseye pool diving board is a safety hazard . The diving board at the Township's Birdseye Park swimming pool is unsafe, according to a report from the Durham Region Health Unit. | Although the board has not been in use this summer because of damage, the Health Unit "strongly recommends" that it not be re-installed next year as it presents "a potentially serious safety hazard," and it may contravene a regula- tion of the Public Health Act. The report by Public Health Inspector, A. Connor, was tabled at the regular meeting of council August 25. Councillor, Richard Drew said the board was damaged last year and not used this year. However, he said new parts have been ordered and the Property and Parks committee will decide next year if the board is to be re-installed. He said the Ontario regu- lation of the Health Act referred to in the Health Unit report does not apply to the pool's board, because the board had been used before the regulation came into effect in 1977. Mr. Connor told the Star that there could be a "Grey area' whether the regula- tion can be applied. Never- theless, he stated "I would hope the board will not be re-installed." A If it is. next year, Mr. ° Connor said the Health Unit would take a look at the situation at that time. The problem is the degith of the pool. The Health¥ Act regulation says that the depth of the water in a 10-foot radius around the board should be 10 feet. The deep- est part of the Birdseye Pool is 5 ft. 11 in. Also the report from the Health Unit says that the board is located about eight feet from the side of one deck, and this is too close. An inspection of the pool was carried out by the Health Unit on July 23, 1980. Mr. Connor said that to his knowlede there have been no serious accidents at the pool, but he has heard of cases of people scraping themselves on the bottom of the pool. Damage suit filed against Scugog Twp. A suit for damages against Scugog Township has been filed by a Township couple who are claiming that an accident last May was a result of failure by the Muni- cipality to keep a portion of Concession Three in good repair. The writ was filed in Whit- by County Court August 8 by Mr. and Mrs. Fernand Filion of R.R.2 Port Perry. The writ claims the couple and their infant child suffer- Thursday, September 4th, 1980 TOWN INN RESTAURANT 223 Queen Street - Port Perry - 985-2112 CHINESE FOOD ed injuries and property damage in an accident on Concession Three about one mile east of Highway 12. The amount of the claim . « « 3 A J and the nature of the injuries w are not specified in the writ. According to Township administrator Earl Cuddie, the matter has been turned over to lawyers for the municipality's insurance company. He 'said to his knowledge, a date for an initial court hearing has not yet been set. ¢ ---- SE --
