ZN Ts Bro a = R32 OPP Golden Helmets start tour OPP Commissioner Harold Graham is pleased to announce that the Ontario Provincial Police Motor- cycle Precision Team, "The Golden Helmets", will commence their fall tour following the Labor Day week-end. For the first time, fhe motorcycles used in the precision ride this year are 1000 cc, 350 kg Kawasaki Police Specials. They are equipped with two-way radios, electronic sirens, flashing and revolving red - lights, and first aid kits. They are the same machines used on regular traffic patrol. The Golden Helmets team was formed in 1963 and has 18 members including its own commentator, All of the riders are experienced regular OPP motorcycle patrol officers selected on a voluntary basis. They are temporarily relieved of their normal patrol work during their exhibition schedule. Under the direction of Assistant Commissioner J.S. Kay of the -OPP Traffic Division the Golden Helmets have demonstrated their expert riding skill at many fairs and exhibitions across the province. The team has also taken part in a number of major parades: Canadian National Exhibition, Bur- lington's "Sound of Music Festival", Niagara Grape and Wine Festival, where it received top -honours, and various agricultural fairs and Santa Claus parades. A regular participant in the Grey Cup Parade, the team has 'been- scheduled for yet another. appearance this year. Although the team usually limits its appearances to the Fall months, the team joined 'the R.C.M.P. Musical Ride and performed at John Abbott College, in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Montreal, at their sixth annual Police Symposium on May 8 for a crowd of 40,000. -° During this year's Repub- lican party. convention, the motorcycle unit teamed up with the Ontario Provincial Police "Pipes and Drums' as a special feature in the Windsor, Ontario, "Ontario - Yours to Explore" exhibit. ~ OPP motorcycles play an important role on Ontario's highways particularly in the south. Mobility is their biggest asset, bringing first aid and assistance through lines of waiting traffic to the scene of an accident. The - precision perfor-' mance is just that. It should not be construed as trick or stunt riding. Each 30-minute performance is based on numerous intricate maneu- vers, split-second timingand highly developed riding skill. The team undergoes special training for several weeks and continues practis- ing between events to main- tain the perfection necessary for the precise performan- ces. Some of the maneuvers are: Salute formation, sirigle introduction, review drive past, criss cross, single and double weaves, small .and large figure eights, continuing link, thread the needle, the wheel, reverse circle, triple reverse circle, interchange and file, finale' formation and final salute - forming letters O P P.
