For a guy who flunked his high school art course, 25- year old Bob Andrews is doing quite nicely with brush and-paint-these days. The Greenbank native has turned decorative van paint- @ing into a full-time business, and customers are coming to his shop from as far away as Montreal to have Bob put his brush and imagination to work on the sides of their vans. Using an air brush and @pecial acrylic and lacquer enamel paints, Bob's work ranges from the highly sur- realistic images that adorn his own van "Poisoned Pleasure", to soft land- scapes and mountain vistas, which he says are the most Check for tinted 'windshields Vehicles suspected of having illegally tinted wind- shields" and windows are being stopped and checked in Durham Region. Insp. Trevor McCaghery said the force was informed of the new regulations of the Highway Traffic Act just before September 1, the day they came into effect. "To my knowledge, we haven't as yet laid any charges and it may well be that our final guidance will come only after the courts have ruled on cases particu- larly with regard to wording of charges and fines set," he ® said. He said several owners of historic vehicles have volun- tarily brought their vehicles to police to have tinted wind- shields and windows checked. "They were satis- ¢ factory," he said. Bob started painting murals on the sides of vans = five years ago, and went into the business full-time on his own about a year ago. And business is good. He now gets an order a month for a full-detailed mural on a van, along with smaller special paint jobs for cars, boats, motorcycles and even snowmobiles. Bob says that most of his customers have a vague idea of what they want on the sides of their vans and work- ing from that basic idea or theme, he develops the over-. all effect. A full mural on both sides of a van including the base paint job, will take about 70 hours to complete and the cost is in the $900 range. More intricate detail like the mountain scene on the van in the accompanying' photo will run in the neigh- bourhood of $1200. Van owners seem to be more than willing to pay the price. Many of them are spending much more than that to renovate the interior of their machines with ster- eos, a bar and TV set, soft Xp 0 doa I VARS TERR van for owner Pete Shier of lighting, bed and plush carp- eting.
