Av} BR Hk 2 0S SUERTE by Danny Millar ® Port Perry Canadian Tire men's softball team took the first game 7-2 and dropped the second 5-0 to Janetville in the opening round of Lake Scugog Softball League play eo last week. The deciding game of the series goes on Wednesday September 10 in Port where Janetville were victims in the opener. Kevin Walker outlasted o Dave Mills to get the winning decision in the first game. He allowed runs in the first and third frames only. Mills was solid but not outstanding as Port touched him for two runs in the third and eighth and lone tallies in the second fourth, and seventh. Doug Scott drove in Phil Cochrane with Port's initial score on a infield dribbler that Mills threw past first base. Cochrane had opened with a single into shallow left field and was sacrificed to ® third by Walker. Yacht Club (From page 12) annual Auction and Beef @:arbecue. Did you know that the two ® happiest days in the life of a boater are the day he buys his boat....and the day he" sells it. Janetville evens "softball playoff Dave McComb got the visitor's run in the third with a base hit, followed by a Mills safety, and a Cochrane, who was playing his first game of the season as catch- er, throwing error. Port loaded the bases in. the third and an infield error on Ken Irvine's hit brought in a run. Scott delivered another run batted in single, this one straight up the middle of the infield with two out. Bill St. John pounded a fourth inning double with Ken Jeffrey on base to bring in the fourth run of the match for the home side. Janetville was limited in its scoring opportunities but they missed a glorious chance in the eighth when Bill Caudet flew out to end the inning with the bases filled. - In the home half of the eighth, Jay Williams walked and pinch hitter Robert Evans singled. Williams went to third on a delayed steal and scored when Evans worked out of a rundown between first and second. Evans ended up on third and scored on a similar play when Ken Bryant, who had legged out a bunt, got caught in a rundown off first base. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., September 10, 1980 -- 13 Minor hockey names coaches for busy up-coming season by Danny Millar Doug Scott, who coached the Bantam A's to last year's all-Ontario finals, will attempt to duplicate that feat with two hockey teams this coming season. He has taken on the responsibility of the Midget A and Bantam A groups. Scott and the other coach- es were named at a meeting held by the Port Perry Minor Hockey Association Sunday, Sept. 7 at the Old Town Hall. Coach Scott succeeds Clare Potts in the Midget role. Potts, ironically, takes Scott's place with the Junior C MoJacks. A manager has not yet been selected for the midgets because Bob Storrey, who performed those duties a year. ago, has apparently retired. Scott is one of the more dedicated workers on the Port Perry sports scene. He has, and continues to coach teams in softball and hockey as well as serving on the PPMHA and playing broom- ball. He also runs the Lake Scugog Hockey league and skippers its Port Perry entry. Scott will be teaming up with Don Phinney for 'the Bantam unit. There was no team but Scott was selected over Mike McQuade for the midgets. The other coaching posit- ions are filled with new but familiar faces. The MoJacks captain of 1979-80, Bill Bridge will be in command of the Midget B's and Jim Burnett takes over the Pee Wees A charge. They suc- ceed Don Orr and Larry Page, respectively. The youngest competitive team coach is Paul Van Camp. Van Camp has a couple of years experience in the Atom House League ranks but this is his first year on a competitive team. He - played midget hockey last Dalllal -two__tea other choice for the Bantam =.= year and will handle the PeeWee B's for the coming term. Other than Scott, three pilots are returning to the positions they filled at this time a year ago. Dave Barkey, Bob Jamieson, and Dave Ballingal]l, are in charge of the Atom A boys who won a regional title. Don Steele is back with the Novice A's. Cathy Steele becomes the only woman manager when she takes that spot with the Novices. The other returnees are Dave Giannini and Garry Baker with the Bantam B boys. Over half of the house league coaching positions have been filled so far but the big problem area may be the PeeWees where only two volunteers have signed up. Wayne Venning, who had the Atom B's in the preceeding season, will take one vacancy while Jerry Reid has the other. One possible reason that there has been a scarcity of men for this age group is because traditionally they start their games at 7:00 a.m. Saturday mornings. A The Bantams also have ms confirmed _in FRI - BLACKSTOCK - MINOR HOCKEY - REGISTRATION - Steve Thompson-Wayne Stainton, and Bill Brown and Bob Lee, while Fred Oxley goes it alone. Jim Callan and Jim Baitch were in the Novice house league for the 79-80 year, but they have moved up to Atom this time around. They join Keith Beer, who was Venning's partner in the Atom B operation, and Bob Biffen and Bill Euuwes. Bob Spencely and Dan Millar will each take another Novice HL team while Brian and Steven Robinson have spoken for another outfit in that age category, the young- est team league in the PPMHA. | The competitive coaches have a meeting next Sunday Sept. 14 to discuss OMHA rule changes. The B teams will be playing in a new league this year with a lot smaller, northern teams such as Woodville, and Little Britain. The A clubs go back to the Lakeshore group, one of the toughest in the prov- ince. Last year that circuit had four OMHA champions and one finalist--the Port Perry Bantams. Ladies golf winners The ladies from Summer- lea Golf Course were out in full swing Tuesday evening August 26. The day and night regular golfers were combining their skills to see who were the big winners. The low gross was won by Lucy Wilson with a 39 and low net by Rose-Ann Bishop with a 17. Least amount of putts was captured by Marg Boynton and Bonnie Mac-- Leod shot the longest drive. Hidden Hole Low Score winner was Mary Hawes and Hidden Hole least putts was won by Eva Mercado.
