Port dominated play in the last half following the goals. Goalkeeper Alf Huggins made a couple of tough chance stops. Huggins was lucky to preserve his shutout in the first half when Jon Howell made a remarkable defensive play to redirect a drive with his head after the high, hard shot went over Huggins. Dean Stone got the only Rebels goal of the junior contest. It came late in the contest on a shot into the corner of the net from the opposite side of the field, making it 3-1. Tim Lovely and Conrad Phillips split the scoring for McLaughlin as each notched a pair. Phillips, especially, -was a threat as he had excellent speed and ball control and he initiated sev- eral chances. Lovely got the first goal on a rebound off the post after Phillips stole the ball near. center and carried it in. The marker was a heartbreaker for Port because they had some good early chances but came away empty handed. Phillips connected in the early moments of the second half on a long lead pass from Greg Latin off a free kick. Lovely followed up with a breakaway score to put the game out of hand before Stone replied for the visitors. Phillips ended the scoring late in the game on a long shot from the sidelines about 25 yards out. John Scott and Winnie Tobin local Doubles Champions by Danny Millar John Scott and Winnie Tobin teamed up to unseat Dave Nicholishen and Diane Burt as the Port Perry Tennis Club's Doubles champions when they won 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday, Septem- ber 16 in the final. The tournament had "actually started the previous weekend but was postponed because of rain on a couple of occasions. The last match was slated for 5:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, and it too, was delayed because of Nicholishen's late arrival. Diane Burt got off to a slow start in the service game as she had six faults including two double faults in the first game and ended up giving it away. She double faulted again in the fifth game that gave Scott-Tobin a 3-2 advan- tage. Nicholishen was also shaky in making unforced errors trying to put away winning shots. The first set was. closely contested after the Burt- Nicholishen team settled into their game plan. -Three of the games went to deuce and two others to 40-30 before a winner was-declared. The most effective tactic by Scott was a long, lazy lob shot that he used to gain ground when he was caught deep in the back court. The final game of the match went to deuce before Scott won it on a passing shot down the line. Nicholishen-Burt were likely favourites heading into the final. After all, they were last year's winners and had beaten the strong Jay Neill team handily in the semi-finals. = ATTIRE TERE AAA Winter Storage - PORT PERRY YACHT CLUB - 70¢ per Foot PHONE 985-7451 BEGINS: RINT ~ A ICE SKATING SCHEDULE Scugog Arena 985-8698 FRI, SEPT. 26th - Public School 3: 45 to 4:45PM.
