The recommendation to go ahead with the purchase of the two-acre site was con- tained in a confidential management committee report to the Durham coun- cil. ! The site, which cannot be serviced by municipal sewer or water is on the northwest corner of the intersection of Highway 2 and Regional Road 57, a few blocks west of downtown Bowmanville. The principle objector to the proposed site was Oshawa councillor John Aker, who first of all wanted to know if there is provision in the 1980 budget for the purchase, and then said that moving a police station away from the downtown core "would be a mistake." Although the price of the two-acre site was not dis- cussed at the Regional council meeting last week, it is thought to be in the $15,000 range. : Councillor __ Aker. _was ~adament in his opposition to the site, saying that other municipalities have learned from past experiences that it is not desirable to move a police station away from the downtown core. "Not only does a police building help to give the downtown core an urban boost, it provides a police presence to the downtown, and this is something that people want," he stated. The present Durham Police station in Bowman- ville is located in the Dad, son hurt badly in crash An Epsom man and his 5-year old son were seriously injured last week when their car went out of control near Uxbridge. Durham Police said Drew Royal was taken by air ambulance to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where his condition was critical. The boy's father, Gordon John Royal, 30, is in serious condition in Sunny- + brook Hospital. The car driven by Royal flipped over several times and burst into flames after it went out of control on Re- gional Road 8 just east of Uxbridge. The two occu- pants were thrown free of the car and were found on a nearby lawn. downtown area in a building owned by the Town of New- castle. The fire department shares the building. Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard told Regional coun- cil that members of local council were aware of the proposed site, and he said that although the local coun- cil did not pass a formal motion endorsing the site, none of the members ex- pressed any opposition. He also said that the Durham Region Police Commission is in favour of the proposed site. The total cost of the land and the new building of $450,000 has been ear- marked in the Region's four- year financial forecast, and is listed as an expenditure for 1981. At the urging of councillor Aker, however, the matter was referred to the Durham council's finance committee, of which he is the chairman. During discussion 'last week on the issue, Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard disclosed that several sites for a new police station were examined, including a couple in the downtown core. "But they were ruled out, he said, because of the high purchase costs. Scouting movement in jeopardy warns association Pres. The future of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in Port Perry could be in jeopardy unless more parents get actively involved in the routine operations of these organizations. Bert Dejeet, president of the Port Perry Parents Association, issued this warning last week, stating that the leaders are forced to do routine administrative -work-because-there-are not enough parents involved in the Association. The Parents Association is the support group for Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Rovers and Adventurers, and it handles the day-to-day business of operating the Scout Hall, including fund-raising for the $2,500 needed each year to operate the hall, leader training, and the purchase of supplies. "Unless more parents get involved in the administrat- ive duties of the Parents Association, the whole scout- ing movement in Port Perry could suffer," he said. __He said there are approxi- _- "mately "250 youngsters registered this year, and he hopes that more parents will decide to get actively involv- He urged parents and any- one interested in helping to attend the Parents Associa- tion annual meeting which is coming up this Sunday even- ing September 28 at the Scout Hall on Lilla Street in Port Perry.
